We have the most beautiful place about 3 miles from my house called The Pocket. There's a waterfall, hiking trails, horseback riding trails, a really nice creek and a boardwalk in the woods. I have taken my grands there to wade in the creek mant times and they love it. It's the most peacefull place way back off a dirt road at the foot of Pigeon Mt.

So I got all 3 grands yesterday at 6:00 and we decided to go to the Pocket and get a little wet before going to pick blueberries. We get there and there is only one guy in the parking lot. We walk over to the creek and the boardwalk and there is hardly any water in the creek except to the right of the bridge. We all go down there and it's the most perfect swimming hole. Chloe, the oldest is just about to go in the water. She had her right foot in. I looked where she was and I saw it. That's all it takes for me. I saw a snake! In the water. Looking right up at Chloe. It was about a foot long and looked orange to me. But it was a little shady there. SO I screamed and said snake! We all took off as fast as we could. Which was FAST!Poor Chloe was scared to death. She was shaking. Kept saying she didn't want to die. We ran out of there as fast as we could all screaming. That guy was still there and was looking at us. We said there was a snake in the water.

It took Chloe awhile to get over that. It was right there near her foot too. I don't think I want to go back there again. And I know they won't either.

But we did talk about how that is so much like Satan. We can be going along enjoying life and all of a sudden there he is. Just waiting to get us. It just takes one little mistake. One little slip up. And he's got you. Just that fast. So I hope that will stick in their little minds when they think they're in the clear. Nothing like a sneaky creepy snake to ruin everything.

Kris

I remember once fishing with my mom and there was a snake in the water. She totally freaked out! I'm not afraid of snakes, but she makes up for everyone who isn't. I will never forget that!

Poor Chloe. Nice life lesson though...thanks for posting.

Kris how true though about Satan!! He does just wait for us to not being paying attention, things going along fine in life and ....

I hate snakes. I saw a garter snake here and he is not welcome at all. Grandson threw him way in the woods so he better stay there or this crazy woman will be getting a shotgun!!

How can you say that a snake is from Satan, when God created all the creatures on this planet with a purpose, snakes to rid us of vermin/rodents, so they do not contaminate/destroy our food crops, they also are an importent part of our eco-system. Rather than teaching your children/grandchildren to scream and run for their lives, why not teach them healthy respect and caution and how to tell the difference between poisenous and non-poisenous snakes.

Teresa, I don't thing Kristin ment that snakes are from Satan because we all know that God created all living things. I think what she was trying to say is that Satan is kind of like a snake. If you make one wrong move the snake ( or satan) will get you.
I do agree that people should teach their children how to tell the difference between poisenous and non- poisenous snakes.
Remember, all creatures are fearfully and wonderful made, even snakes.

Thank you Channah. That is what I meant. And I did not say the snake was Satan. I said it was so like Satan. Big difference there I think. But wasn't Satan a serpent (snake) in the Garden of Eden? And he was beautiful and mesmerizing and caught Eve's attention very quickly with his looks and his words. That's what I was trying to say.

And I am so terrified of snakes that my very first instinct is to scream and run. I can't even look at a snake picture. So I am NOT the person to teach anyone what is a good snake or a bad snake. Sorry. But I do not like ANY snakes. Period. And aren't ALL water snakes poisonous? And don't poisonous snakes KILL people too? Well, I am staying away from them and I hope my grandkids do too. Actually, they can look at pictures of snakes and can tell what is a good snake or a bad snake. And Chloe knew that was not a good snake that was right at her feet.

And I am so sorry that every time I post something, I get a negative comment from certain people. I will try and not post anymore of my own threads again so I don't offend or hurt someone's feelings or say the wrong thing.

Kris.... please keep posting.. I eagerly open any of your threads to see what you got to share.. I feel that we're neighbors and friends. I understood you clearly with your representation of snake and Satan. I thought of the scene in the garden of Eden when you shared the story. Don't let others who mistaken for what you said get to you. You did the right thing in regards to your grands.. they were under your care.

Kris I love what you have to say!! And I HATE snakes, sorry folks but that is my reality. I have a horrible fear of them and I don't have the big nasty things up here. I will have barn cats to take care of my mice problem and will gladly share my land with them.

My family thinks I am nuts wanting a gun to shoot a garter snake but drastic times call for drastic measures

Kristin, I'm sorry if you think I am picking on "YOU", but I am "NOT". I feel very strongly about not killing an animal, just because it might hurt you, especialy if you don't know for sure if its even poisoness. FYI not all snakes that you see in the water are poisoness, garter snakes, gopher snakes, king snakes, etc will swim when they need to or to cool off, plus they all need water in order to shed. I also am a firm beleiver in teaching children about all animals, domesticated and wild, dangerous and not, and the proper way to act when you incounter them. I will try not to respnd to your posts if that will make you feel better, cause I sure do not want you and others to think bad of me, I am who I am, and I will not change for anyone but GOD.

P.S.I am also the first to destroy "ANY" animal that is a profound danger to my family or livlyhood if there is no other way, and as I have posted on here in the past regarding rattlesnakes and wild dog packs.

I can imagine how scared all of you were. When I was about 9 or 10 I liked to go walking barefoot along our little stream. I knew there were snakes there but that didn't stop me. My mom was always harping on me to wear shoes but I always thought I knew better! One day as I was walking I was ready to take a step and for some reason looked down first. A snake was right under my bare foot! If I had not looked down I would have stepped on it. I screamed and ran and never walked barefoot along the creek again.

Rae, thats sad that you would kill a garter snake. I don't like snakes but I could never kill a non - poisoness snake.

OK, I hate snakes..mostly because I am TERRIFIED of them. I know they do good, as long as they do their good out of my view.
I don't think any of the good ones need fear that they will fall to an untimely demise on my part.
It is kinda hard to kill anything when you are:
A. Screaming bloody murder & running aimlessly in circles or across numerous townships flailing arms, legs & any other available appendage..or
B. Passed out due to fright.

Ok chill a little please...like my family is really going to let me lose with a shotgun in the yard for snake. It is figure of speech, but I don't like snakes plain and simple and I don't have too!!! I am sure Kris did not start this to start the great debate on snakes. I am sure I am offending many and am sorry just hate to see things get so blown out of proportion here. I have seen it too many times in life and it isn't pretty

Kris tried to tell us a story that was scary for her and her family and I feel for you!!!

Yes, you are right, Rae. I did not mean to start a discussion on the virtues of snakes. I know there are more good snakes than bad snakes. I just happen to be in the group that thinks a good snake is a dead snake. I am sorry, but I have a horrible fear of them. Unless God takes this fear away (and He can, I just haven't asked yet) I will always be leary and afraid and run around screaming my fool head off until it is gone. Lisa, that's so funny and you hit the nail on the head with that!!! There have been WAY too many times I have come across snakes and acted just like that. I could probably list every single time that's happened to me. And I could probably win a race during that time.

So really, I am sorry this has turned out to be such a mess. Teresa, I do appreciate all the advice I have ever gotten from you. It's just the way you come across sometimes that I have a problem with. I know you mean well and do have alot of experience to share. But I will let my 6 cats and 3 dogs take care of all the rats and mice around here. And the hawks do a good job also. And just so you know, I am going to google rattle snakes and let Kansas look at them so she will know what to look out for when she's outside.

We live with huge hay fields on 3 sides. They have not been mown til yesterday. I am now going to spend alot of time inside because every time they mow the critters start coming. I will not mention what happens when they do come around, ok? I will keep that to myself from now on. I don't want to upset Channah.

Laila, we live and learn, don't we? I am so glad you saw that before you took another step. I think with me it's just instinct. I can sense when they are near me.

And thank you all for your kind words to me. I love it here and probably couldn't be dragged away. I love you ALL. And everyone has such great stories to share and great advice.

Kris

I love how everyone here has a different perspective. Very much like a family, we won't always agree and we won't all see things the same way or handle things in a way that others might agree with - but it is love that binds us together. BTW - I'm not necessarily afraid of snakes just cautious and I have a healthy respect for them... Spiders on the other hand are an entirely different matter. ....blehhhh!
