I am making a chessboard cake for my son's birthday. I want it to be black and white checkerboard and got a bunch of black colored icing tubes etc to help me achieve this effect.

Any tips or tricks? I decorate cakes for my kids, but thinking about it is daunting to me. I want it to look even etc and will be using a double batch of batter in a larger cake pan so there will be plenty of room to decorate on.

I have used dental floss and laid it across the bottom icing while it is drawn tight to make lines to keep my lettering straight. It doesn't show very much but it is enough to keep things straight. Maybe you could use the trick to mark off the cake on the white icing, then fill in the squares with the black icing.

I did a checkerboard cake with fondant for my daughter's wedding. The black squares were cut out of fondant and laid on the solid fondant base cake. It was a little tricky but turned out great!

Thanks, I ended up using black icing for some of the lines then filling in with black liquorice for the others. :) If anybody is interested just send me an email and I'd be happy to share a picture.
