I am addicted to hermit cookies that I buy from the local bakery... I would love to make them....instead of getting a recipe from the computer, I thought I'd ask you fellow farmgirls if you had one

My mom made "hermits" all the time when I was a kid. I'll talk to her this weekend and ask her for her recipe. I remember they were delicious!

Oh, please post recipes. I remember my mom buying hermits at the bakery, because she never found a recipe that was as good as theirs. I'd love to find a good hermit recipe. |

The following is a recipe my mom got from her grandmother, who for a while ran a roadside diner and later when the town built up ran the hospital cafeteria. Great gramma McCoy (yes, of THOSE McCoys LOL) was known for her cooking, especially the knowledge of how to cook less than ideal meats, and for her ability to divine for water. She died when I was just a month old but from the stories I have heard, I sure wish I had known her! Divorced and with four kids out of the house, she moved from Oklahoma to Washington by covered wagon with her 11 year old youngest (my grandma) in 1936. Wonder what she would have thought of the internet LOL. Anyhow, this recipe doesn't have oatmeal but adding some would be easy enough if you cut back on the flour just a tad, and/or added more milk. I also add 1 TBSP of cocoa to the recipe. Doesn't add chocolate flavor, just a subtle spice no one can identify and I love to make folks guess LOL!!
Hermit Cookies - Makes 5 dozen cookies
4 c flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 2 tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp cloves 1/2 tsp salt 2 c brown sugar 1 c butter, softened 4 eggs 1/4 c milk 1 c raisins 1 c chopped dates 1 c chopped nuts
Stir together flour, salt, spices and baking soda. In another bowl, combine brown sugar and butter till smooth. Beat in eggs, one at time. Alternatively add flour mixture and milk to butter mixture. Stir in dried fruit and nuts. Drop walnut sized portions 2" apart onto lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake 12-15 min at 375 degrees F. Cool and then store airtight.

I will have to try your recipe Catherine - and what a story to go with it. The hermits we used to get were maybe 1/3" thick bars that were about 2" long. Maybe I'll try shaping your recipe into bars. Are these soft? That's what I remember about the ones my mom used to buy. |

Hi Melanie -
I called my Mom last night and got her recipe. I remember they were delicious.
SOFT SPICY HERMITS
1 cup sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 3 cups sifted flour 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup molasses 3/4 cup raisins
Cream together sugar and oil and set aside. In a separate bowl mix together molasses and milk and add sifted ingredients a little at a time. Add this mixture to the sugar and oil.
Spread batter on a standard size cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes depending on the thickness. Cut into rectangle bars and sprinkle with granulated sugar while still hot.
Enjoy!

You know what, I haven't made these in years. I honestly don't remember them very well. I don't think they were particularly soft but I could be wrong. When I pulled out the recipe to post it I saw I had written the note about adding the chocolate on it, it's a trick I use in a lot of spice recipes. They were always a favorite of my mom's but as a kid I didn't get into them too much, I always was after the chocolaty, gooey cookies. We always made LOTS of cookies at Christmas. It's just that the name stuck out for me, as they were a favorite of my mom's. But as I got older I now prefer all the nut cookies my mom also liked over the gooey rich chocolate ones....I need to make these soon to see what I think of them now LOL. Oh, and maybe the other recipe posted, for comparison ROFLOL!! On a more serious not, using shortening gives one a much softer, chewy texture than butter, so I think the second recipe might be more what you are after. Butter is crisper in cookies usually.

What fun!! I love the recipes posted and plan to try them!! I've never heard of Hermit cookies, but I have the Neiman Marcus recipe that has become our all time favorite and it sounds very similar, and has the oatmeal, but also chocolate chips and hershey bar chunks. I'll post if anyone is interested! Hugs, Lin

Kind of funny, after posting that recipe.......I told you all I really didn't remember them that well, they were a favorite of my mom's and not mine....well, I made them the other day and they were not what I remembered. Yes, they are a soft cookie and wow did I like them this time around! My tastes really have changed with age. Apparently everyone at work liked them too as they are all gone! I have been pouring over the old cookie recipes I have. I think maybe I was mistakenly remembering rocks, not hermits. I know my mom really liked both, she got from both from her grandmother along with others. Both have raisins and dates, as well as nuts. So now I have to make a batch of rocks and see what I think about those after all these years.
