some of you ladies might think this is trivial, but I'm going to post it anyway. Times are tough and I needed work clothes (business type, not farm type)...caught some exceptionally good deals on clearance, but trouble was, the pants that I bought were WAY to short. I was at the junk store the other day and bought a baggie of used, mostly hand-made lace for $1 -- I'm sewing some of it on to the bottom of those pants, and not only does it look way cool, I feel very good about expressing my individualism. This is truly a liberating moment....sitting on the front porch, in the shade, mending these bargain paints, and a cool breeze with the burds chirping.....does life get any better than this?????

Good idea! Those are the things that are in style right now anyway.

Patricia,
I did that with my wedding dress. It was my sister-in-law's dress and she is a lot shorter than me. I added lace to the bottom and to the sleeves and it looked fab!! Good job on your farmgirl creativity!

Great job! I have another idea for you. A friend of mine takes the collar off her dress shirts, you know when they get floppy, and makes the collar a mandarin. She just hand stiches the collar back together. It really changes the shirt. I had purchased a no-iron shirt from an Eddie Bauer outlet loved the color purple - but the collar was never right. Hence the outlet price. The shirt sat in my closet for years. She fixed the collar - now I love the shirt!! Keep up the good work, Barbara

Love it! Good for you, Patricia. Barbara, what does a mandarin collar look like? What your friend does sounds intriguing.

Great idea; can you post a picture? I'd love to see the new look you've created. I need to get to our local thriftstore. On Saturday, I bought a man's 100% cotton shirt at a garage sale; I wear it gardening -- it's perfect to cover a t-shirt and it's pink! Matches my gloves. Suzanne |

patchworkpeace you can google under images to see the collar. I think of it as asian in style. You need to start with a collar that has the band. Like a man's dress shirt. You take tha "collar" part off and then you just have the band. This is something that you do by hand. Or I quess you could sew the band top back together with a decorative stitch. Hope this helps, Barbara

Also nice for skirts :) I bought a lovely pair of trousers in Thailand and they are a tiny bit short on me. I will add a lace band in between as well. A sweet pattern is a few inches above the bottom part and above that pattern I will add the lace. (the bottom has elastic in them, too cute lol)

I like the idea of adding the lace to the bottom of the jeans...I've done that too, also to the bottom of some t shirts....not the lace but a bottom of another t shirt..when the t shirts shrink up...When I find a style I like it usually is too short on the torso..so this works well.. What great ideas everyone has... |

I did like Marian did. Instead of putting the additions to the bottom of too short pants, I inserted it below the knees.I have so many scraps from quilting projects and giveaways from friends that I piece long strips to use on the pants and then make a matching vest or trim a vest I already own, to match. Making a purse to match the pants is great too!

I purchased a couple of pair of khakis @ bargain store that were too short-- but the price was right anyway I cut strips of a black/cream toile print and sewed on the bottom.
saved a great deal of $$ and still looked presentable for work Lila |

You can use yo-yo's to edge the bottoms, too! I get jeans that are too small, split the sides, and piece in a seam of fabric or ribbon. They look cool - like tux pants! You can use velvet ribbon to make them a bit fancier/simpler. Or use another color of denim (from an older pair of jeans) for the seam. Can you post pics of your pants? :)
