For years now I've been telling my husband that we need to get a reel mower for various reasons. The obvious reasons being that it would save $ and is earth friendly. The big reason is that it seems that every time we invest in a new lawn mower, it seems like it's in the shop EVERY summer getting fixed. Our current mower that was just fixed last summer is broken again this summer. My poor husband is not the handyman type. I'm the mechanical one in the family. However, engines and electricity are not my cup of tea. My request for a reel mower finally sank in with him. He was online looking @ various models the local hardware stores carry. Remembering how his parents are pack rats, I asked him if he thought they might have one. Luck would have it, they did!! They had one from my husband's late grandfather. We have officially inherited it. We just need to get it cleaned up, sharpened and tighten the handle that's loose. Then we're good to go! Now that's a REEL deal!!

Hi Lynn. I'm like you. I don't like gas mowers either. They stink, use too much fuel and are so noisy. I've been after my husband to buy me a Reel-Mower for about 4 years. I finally said I was going to buy myself one, so he got me one.(go figure)haha Ace Hardware had them on sale for $98.00. I love it. It's not as heavy as the old-fashion ones.I can pick it up with one hand. It even came with a sharpening kit. We have one of the old ones that was his Dad's, but I have had back troubles for years and probably wouldn't get much done with it. I just love being able to mow and still hear the birdies sing. What a blessing! Enjoy!

I had a reel mower but it was just too much work and I have a small yard. I got an electric mower almost for free through the Louisville's gas mover trade in program. I got on freecycle, got an old broken gas mower for $5, took it to the recycling place and got a $100 voucher for an electric mower! It is corded but just like vacuuming. I love that it starts as soon as I pull the handle and no fumes!

Judy, yes these old ones are very heavy! My arms should be nice & buff by the end of summer. :)
Kathrn, you are a clever one! I never would have thought of finding something old to turn for something new! I wish we had a program like that in Lansing. We've had 2 broken mowers in our garage at the same time. Frustrating!
