about feeding dogs and cats raw meat? A friend of mine raises Aussie's and she only feeds them raw meat and bones. She found a slaughter house near us that gives all that away free. So I went Friday and got a cooler full of beef. It had a smell to it. It was in the room where they were cutting meat. So I wonder how old it was to have had a smell? But there was SO much meat on those big bones. It was not slimy at all. It lookes really good. I got 6 baggies full of cut up meat plus several bags of small bones with meat still on them.
So I had given Bubba about 2 cups of about 1" cubes and he loved it. Ate it all. Well, about 1/2 hour later I was outside and so was all the meat I had just given him. All in a neat little pile just like it was in the bowl. He had thrown it all up.
So maybe I gave him too much to begin with? Or was it just too bad? I don't know. I may just give all this to my friend for her dogs. Or should I just cook it before I give it to my dogs?
Does anyone else do raw meat for thier cats or dogs?

I have heard it can cause worms but my dogs eat horse poop all the time so they get worms anyway. I have and do feed raw meat to my dogs and cats on occasion. I do not feed "bad" meat though. When our neighbors butcher the cattle they give us all the leg bones which usually have some meat attached. It looks like a boneyard in our yard! The dogs will chew off allthe meat in a day and will work on the bones for weeks. The only major drawback is that all the calcium and bone turns their poop chalky white! It is weird!

He is not use to barf, bones and raw foods. You need to start out slower. I began with baking some of it,mixing in veggies and greens too,plus I added their dry food too. I measuered it out and was careful to feed it in measuered out portions. I do not have time for this way of feeding now, but it great for dogs and cats. It is the way nature made their bodies digest food. We changed them by making them eat kibble. Look up BARF, bones and raw foods; on the internet. I will help.

My daughter feeds her Great Danes a raw food diet. They do really well on it. She did start them out slow and uses all sorts of meet. She mostly feeds hers boar and deer. There is a place close to us the does hunting weeks or weekends for fancy smancy CEO's of huge companies etc. They usually fly in and do the hunting but they don't take home what they kill so the owner calls my daughter and gives her the meat for the dogs. She seldom buys dog food any more.

I've been feeding Boxer a raw meat diet ever since he developed problems chewing his kibble. I would say start off slow, and if it smells funny, don't use it. Boxer is doing great on his current diet (mostly raw meat, rice, and baked sweet potatoes). I also feed him organ meat and recently began adding an all-natural supplement powder to his food. Once you get used to feeding a raw meat diet, it seems strange to do it any other way.

Well, I guess I will start out slow and gradually increase it. It does seem like a natural way for dogs and cats to eat. We have really messed with their systems for sure. I have always fed them scraps but never straight raw meat.

Our dog, an Austrialian cattle dog, has to have it in small quantities but we give her all varieties of raw meat, just small quantities and we don't have it to give daily. If she finds some "road kill", especially deer, she'll gnaw on that but it doesn't agree with her . . . the "aging" stuff from out there never does so we have to keep her away from it. We do let her chew on bones ... seems to do okay with those . . except chicken and turkey bones, of course
Our cat eats all manner of things but it's usually what she hunts down and she is pretty intelligent about how much of it she will eat. We give her bits of chicken and beef but they are tiny bits because that's all she wants.

CJ, my cats are constantly killing little critters but they never eat them. I guess if I just fed them raw meat they might? I hate when they do that. Like it's just for sport. Bad cats.
This place that gives the meat away has beef on Tues. and Fri. and pork on Mon. and Thurs. Does anyone feed raw pork? I kind of am scared to do that with pork because we are supposed to only eat pork cooked well done. Just wondering about that. Maybe the bones would be ok and just cook the meat?
Also I have heard it's ok to give dogs and cats RAW chicken bones but not cooked bones because they are more brittle when cooked. Anyone else?

good morning farmgirls, i do feed my dogs raw meat.i have never fed raw chicken bones. they love the raw food. i am speaking dogs here. i but range fed beef scraps and heart and liver. it comes from healthy food grade beef animals. i pay 35 cents a pound. the organ meats are very rich. for mine i am careful not to give too much. back when the belted steer got loose we butchered it. our skimo grabbed the heart and ws gone. well he needed a vet visit. they called him grandpa. when ever he would walk he would fart like crazy. he was so full. they kept him walked him and helped him pass all that meat and bloat. he is fine. i am very careful now.on another thread i saw where i could pressure cook the bones. they become soft and then can be smashed and used for other things like bone meal. i have a friend that feeds raw chicken bones. it scares me. yes i feed raw pork. i think the reason we were trained by the fda to overcook pork and chicken is to kill all the germs THEY get on OUR meat in processing. just like irradiating our veggies to kill anything on them. such as ecol-i salmonella that occurs from grazing run off. i never overcook my pork. its my pork and there are no worms. it is clean pure meat. so i only am concerned with too rich too fat. i know you girls grow the same. the meat scraps need to not smell in my opinion. i think its a great way to feed well save money reuse waste. i keep all fat trim and bones in a freezer. the wild birds love the fat in winter. just a thought or two. just my thoughts happy days sherrye

My daughter feeds her Danes raw chicken and turkey bones. It is the process of cooking that makes the bones dangerous. The raw bones are actually good for them. She explained it all to me once and if you would like me to post it here let me know I am sure she would write it out in an e-mail if I asked her. According to her you shouldn't feed any cooked bones not just chicken etc. As far as for the bad or old stuff it depends on how it is stored. I learned living over seas that even the people over there eat what they called aged beef. It smells aweful and they consider it a delicacy. I use to hate walking into the butcher shop because that "aged" beef was all I could smell. So it is the storage that matters.

I had a dog that developed a serious allergy and had to feed her a raw diet. She did very well and we were able to take her off of steriods.

I went back today to get more. They already had it all in a box. It does not smell bad at all. But you know, the whole place actually smells like this meat. I got 7 gallon bags of good bones with lots of meat on them. Plus he's out there now eating on a big bone full of meat. And I didn't cut any meat off the bones this time. I figured they'd have to actually chew the meat this way.
And I wanted to see if there was any difference in the Tues. meat from the Fri. meat. And so far since I have gone on both days I like Tues. better. It's fresher. They might leave the meat from Tues out til Friday, that's why it smelled soured. I did cook some a little this morning and he seems to have kept it down this time. But like CJ said, it could be because it's from aged meat. And I hate to ask because it's free.
Thanks for all the good info, ya'll. I need it for sure as this is a new thing for me and I do not want to make my animals sick doing this the wrong way.

My dog does this too. for her it's just too much all at one time. sometimes when I'm cooking I'll keep handing her scraps not really paying attention, and like you said...an hour later and outside we go!
She'll eat it again like this and the secomd time around it will stay put.
I have seen cheetahs do this. they'll eat really fast, hoark it back up, and eat it all again.
Gross!
if I could feed all raw I would too.

something else that is supposed to be really good for dogs too is raw green tripe....or cows stomach.
Kris, if the place you get the meat and bones does it, you might chance asking for this too. Or if it's still too much in the raw for your tastes, you can go to any butcher and ask for the same thing.
I have heard that for racing dog sled teams, this is all some are fed due to its hugh nutrient value.
One of the speciality stoes we go to has freeze dried tripe in strips.
It still smells kind of weird, but equally good I imagine |
