My daughter and I just bought some cherries from a local garden. They kind of look marachino with a white, beige center and they are Sour!!! Does anyone know what kind they may be and would they do good for canning. Any good canning recipes for thenm to share? Thanks!! Blessings, Linda

they may be Rainer or Queen Anne, that are not completly ripe yet, so they will not sweeten up anymore, but , you can, can them up for pies, just add alittle extra sugar.

Linda, it sounds like a variety of sour pie cherry. They do work for canning if you put them in a heavy syrup and preserve them for use in future baking rather than eating. They make the best pies!

When we moved into our house 7 years ago the cherry tree in our backyard was just starting to ripen. I was so excited and as soon as they were ripe I picked them all and made a pie. But I didn't know there were sweet cherries and sour cherries, so I didn't add extra sugar to the sweet cherry recipe I followed and it turned out something next to awful. Had much better luck the next summer! Now we just laugh and refer to our annual treat as simply "sour pie."

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Yep, these are Sour!! Lol! Will try them in a pie as we like some sweet/tart in pies. If it is good, we will go get more and can them. It was just funny biting into them expecting sweet and was more like lemon! Lol. Thank you ladies, Linda
