| Our 4h club has a track and field day for the July meeting. It doesnt always hit on the 4th but thats ok. The kids love it. We have home made icecream, bicycle courses, games and crafts. Our town does a firework show free and we bring lawn chairs and listen to the music of local talent. |

We used to put up a volley ball net and play. Then we'd all race to the pool to see who could swim the fastest laps. We also did sack races. That was fun and funny. LOL We usually did not do fireworks because my Luck Dog is so afraid of the sound.

In our family, my husband and I decided to make it a tradition when we got married that every Fourth of July, we read the Declaration of Independence aloud to the whole family - usually at the end of dinner, when everyone's still filling in corners, and content to sit and listen to it without too much fuss (choose your battles, etc.). We felt that in addition to all the BBQ and fireworks and parades and so forth, that it was important for our kids to learn and for us to remember exactly what it is that we're celebrating on that day.
We usually have some kind of a picnic, usually involving the grill (which in our family might mean hotdogs and hamburgers, but more likely means my husband's amazingly awesome, fantastic ribs), and my favorite recipe for "patriotic macaroni and cheese" which involves white cheddar sauce, crumbled bacon, diced red bell peppers, and a garnish of borage flowers, if I have them. If not, I serve it in a blue dish. This year I'm thinking about trying to make a Chillover using one of the 4th of July themed Jello molds I collected over the years by buying however many packages of Jello to get them free. I have a flag one and an outline of the Lower 48.
I try to take the boys to see the fireworks every year, but we haven't managed to make it the last couple of years. Anytime we live in a state where fireworks are legal, I also buy a lot of ground-based fireworks and sparklers and stuff - the boys love the Fourth because of all the explosives, and the month leading up to it, when there are sparklers and snap-its in all the supermarkets, they're constantly begging me to buy them some. I grew up in states where fireworks are illegal, so I can't resist getting some every year, just because I *can*. I love it!
Once, right after I got out of college, I went to see the Captiol Fireworks on the National Mall. They were really impressive, but there were a zillion people there, and it took ages to get home afterwards because the Metro was packed. So I haven't ever gone back. I think I might take the boys one of these years, when they're a little older, but other than that, I'm happy to watch them on TV or go see the smaller, less impressive local show. However, my husband and I have a date - in 2076, for the Tricentenial, we are going to go watch the fireworks on the National Mall. Assuming we both live that long. (If we do, I will be 106, and my husband will be 110.) We also promised each other that if only one of us made it, we'd still go. So I'm kind of looking forward to that. I am content, however, to wait patiently. ;-)
That's all I can think of off the top of my head - if I think of anything else, I'll write more!

We don't celebrate the fourth here ofcourse. But I always display my small American flag :)
(get a few comments here and there, but since it is MY home and MY USA flag......yup I am flying it regardless :) )
