What a neat tutorial Joanna :) I wish we had wild onions growing here (who knows maybe we do in the mountains :)) We have Egyptian or Walking Onions in our garden a friend gave us, talk about multiplying! I like to dry them for future use too. Thanks for sharing :)

thanks Sharon!! Do you have a picture of the walking onions? Do they look similar to my wild onions? I am not familiar with those.

Joanna, they are different from what I can see in your photos, kind of like a giant scallion or green onion. Here is a picture on this site:

Wow! those are wild!! you are right, very different from the wild onions. Can you eat the "tops" as well as the onion it's self? I think you can, like chives or scallions. Thank you for posting the picture for me!

Nigella, Now is the time to find them. . before the leaves die back.
It is harder to find them when you are looking for only the seed head.
You will know you have found them when you break open a leaf and instantly smell onion!

Homesteddinmom, Wow, how lucky for you!!! Just love it when we find something we can forage. I have discovered Angelica, Peppermint, Spearmint, Pineapple Chamomile, wax flower and lovage so far. . . didn't plant any of it!! Think it is from the old farm that use to be here over 80 years ago. Just found where the old well is, although it is filled in. . . could be some treasure near it

Are these wild onions similar to onion tops? My dh and I grow onion tops and use them in gumbos, etc... I love the smell!!!

I haven't seen anything like that around our neck of the woods, but we do have a wild garlic/onion. I use the green part (when it is young) the same as I would chives. It has a very mild onion and garlic flavor. When it gets older and forms a head, I use the bulbs as a mild garlic. Most people in this area just mow them down and you can smell the aroma everywhere. My lawn is full of them all summer and I harvest and dry them for future use.

Hi Jojo. My mom said to tell you that in W.Va. where she grew up, they use to call these "Ramps." Anybody else ever hear of that name?
