I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I am from the great state of Georgia where my husband is slowly introducing me to the fine art of farming. He grew up raising Arabians(his mother still has 8!), and wants to have our son grow up on a farm(Kaden is 2yrs old!). So far we have 12 head of cattle on separate property than ours. We are actually now in the process of renovating our property to raise goats. We are so excited! I am just thrilled at the idea of waking up to go take care of animals everyday!
Besides trying to be a farmgirl-I have taught myself to knit recently. Everyone in the family received scarfs for Christmas! I just completed my first baby blanket for my friend-I hope she'll like it. Well I am looking forward for the opportunity to chat with ya'll later!

A big farmgirl welcome to you Heather. Wow- mit sounds like you are going to be busy with so much farm work! How many goats are you getting? What kind? I am glad you found us. There are alot of girls here that raise goats. Be sure to check in if you have questions.
I am not much of a knitter but do crochet. Do you sew?

Welcome Heather, I have a daughter named Heather. What a nice life you have choosen, Did you just buy the place you are at now? Big house , little house, no house, camper? i have a brother in Georgia, but not on a farm. So tell us more about your new place. and KEEP POSTING!!

We are leaning towards Boer goats maybe mixing in some Kikos. Hoping to start off with 10 head. Is that the right term for counting goats? We just started with the cattle 6 months ago. I really want some chickens so my son can get eggs out of a chicken coop.
Sewing I can make a pillowcase but I want to learn so much more. I also have been dabbling in construction you can say-starting small with doghouses and cathouses. Hopefully making the chicken coop myself.
My husband just thinks it is hilarious that I want to do all these things- I'm his "city girl"-guess I was just a farmgirl at heart as they say.
We live on 5 acres with a single story house. Its a good size for our family-but we eventually would love more land to build on. We also have 24 acres about 30 minutes from our house, that's where the cattle stay. We purchased our house a year ago come June-finally getting started on having it the way we want.

Hi Heather!! I am glad you found us! I have never heard of Kiko goats...I am sure you can teach us alot. I have my first milkcow (since October) and only have one goat now. I used to have Saanens and Oberhasli for milk. The little goat I have now is an angora..for her wool and she is my cow's best buddy.
YOu will love chickens when you get them. I wouldn't be without some! I like to have a variety in my flock so I can tell the hens apart..makes it more fun..and colorful too!
Congratulations on learning to knit. I love knitting too. I kind of go in phases and I have been in a sewing and embroidery phase right now..I tend to knit more in winter I guess. But I do love it..especially knitting socks.
Anyway, welcome to the group!!!

Wow I wish I could knit socks! I would were them all the time come winter! I think I can learn alot via talking with ya'll-A sewing machine is on my wishlist this year so hopefully by next year I will be dabbling in the art of it.

Welcome Heather! I'm a Georgia girl myself- a transplant though! But I've been here 25 years, so this is home for me. You are going to be a great asset to this group. It sounds like you are well versed in farmgirl living already. I am still in the dreaming phase- have to convince my family that I am not really crazy for wanting chickens!!

Welcome Heather!
Socks!!! I love them. They were the third thing I've made when I taught myself to knit (first was a bookmark, second was a scarf). I LOVE knitting socks. They are pretty easy to do (stick with an easy pattern, ribbing at the top and stockinette for the rest, and just follow the directions for the heel, don't think about it just do it...it'll work).
I'm jealous of your goats! I'm having trouble deciding if I want to stay in the house we have (3 bdrm open rancher with 2.17 acres but not zoned agricultural), or finding a place where we can have a few animals (1 of each, enough to experience, but not deal with major problems). Hubby and I are torn since we love our house, so I'm jealous of anyone that is on a farm!
Anyway, enjoy your time here, I've found everyone to be wonderfully helpful! |
