I am interested in taking some classes and possibly getting a certification in herbalism or naturopathy. I was wondering if any of you have done this? And if so, what kind of work are you doing with the certification? Any information would be helpful!

I have tried to find classes in my area as well with no luck. Does anyone know if there is any online classes? I would even be willing to take the classes if they don't end in certification, just to have the info for myself and my family. Good luck with your search, and hopefully I can borrow some info from you on this.

One of the ladies here told me she was going to be doing some online classes. I can't remember who it was though. I will have to go search and see if I can find the conversation.

Angela, we can trade any info that we find. I've looked at some online classes, but I'm just not entirely sure which would be the most useful. If you come across anything good let me know!

I take online classes at the School of Natural Healing. This school was started in the 1940s by Dr. John Christopher. He believed that there should be an herbalist in every family to care for the family's health. So the first level course the offer is called The Family Herbalist. You can take more classes to carry you to much more advanced levels but this is a very good starting/working level course. If you click on my affiliate link you will be able to do the course for $190. I think. Normal cost is 290. Another version of it is 490 but online is 190 through my link.
I am in their Master Herbalist program and I have so enjoyed all the wisdom of this School. There is a lot to learn for those experienced herbal people and for beginners. It is totally worth every penny.

The link above I just clicked on and it took me to the enrollment page. You learn at your own pace with an estimated time being 3 months. Some sections I have taken FOREVER to get through just because life got busy and I lagged behind. There is a lot to this first level and I think all moms should take it. How to make cough syrups, poultices, fometations, and tons of other things. In this course you can download the books and watch the videos on the computer and listen to audio on the computer. There is no other investment other than your time.
The later courses have some copyrighted books that have to be bought but they offer one of each of the books for less than wholesale cost to you. I think the Master Herbalist course is a 3 year course. If you just want the Family Herbalist it is 195. If you agree to take further courses at a reduced price you have them deduct an amount every month off of a credit card. At a more expensive rate you can just pay as you go. But that is the further levels ...as I said the Family Herbalist course is $195.

There is a medicinal herb workshop offered at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountainview, AR that I have personal taken for several years.

Does anyone know if "certification" in herbalism simply means a certificate from the school you complete or is there a widespread certification? What about for being a naturopath? Can anyone define herbalist, naturopath, holistic doctor, osteopathic doctor, etc.?

highlandviewpantry, there's no national certification for herbalism. As I understand it, it's technically illegal to practice medicine in the united states unless you have attended a medical school and whatnot. Practicing clinical herbalists have to be very careful about their word choices and who they agree to treat.
There's also some debate in the herbalism community about the value of certification, with people on the anti-certification side seeing certification as an opportunity for the government and/or allopathic medicine taking over herbal healing. Of course I'm totally oversimplifying because it's not a debate I'm invested in--I learn about herbs for myself and my family. But I think there are valid points on both sides of the debate.

I've found her books and websites to be the best source of learning for me, though there are many fine schools out there!

Hello all.... a wonderful free website is www.learningherbs.com They offer e-books for free how to make natural remedies. if you want to continue learning and THIS is an even MORE awesome site and it is $8.95 per month is www.herbmentor.com. I belong to this and they are constantly offering all kinds of free to member courses. I am addicted to both websites and can't tell you how much I learn. They teach how to make infusions, decoctions, salves, etc. Some of the contributing members to the site are John Gallagher, Susun Weed, Rosalie De'Floriet, James McDonald....all herbalists who are awesome.
