HR 2749 -- This would put a $500 fee on anyone planting a garden, making their own cheese, bread, etc. according to what I have read about it. It has currently passed the House of Representatives and is in the Senate. Please everyone read up about it and then contact your senators. Apparently, Monsanto has a big hand in this - they would certainly profit from it. Surprise, surprise!! It is being promoted as making "food safer".

This bill was introduced back in 2009, so it isn't "new". Maybe many or most of you knew about it. I thought that it had failed so was surprised today when I heard about it on the radio.

There are a couple of links below. The first is from a website where a lady explains what it would do to her small business. The second is an analysis of how it would effect everyone and the last is a site that shows what the status of the bill is.

I'm sure there are a lot of us who can't live without our gardens!

I read about this last year....my thoughts?

1. difficult to enforce--this would ultimately fall on states, counties and cities to enforce-- Impossible.

2. come get me.

Actually, it has a lot to do with food processors...on large scale (and I don't eat that way, anyway...in truth, some of the crap they put in this food SHOULD be labeled accordingly, and maybe folks would stop being sheep and buying what advertisers tell them to!!).

This is a link to a summary provided by Govtrack, which tracks bills in the house and government.

Hi Jonni,

Are you reading food processors as only the larger entities? I don't see anything that protects small producers, businesses from the effects of this bill. It's too bad that so many politicians are so unappreciative of the small farms, businesses. I agree with you and CJ, no one touches my garden!

How about the new one just passed for the EPA, where anyone doing work on a pre 1978 house has to have certified personel on hand to do any paint work. or else get fined...32K a day!!!! Let's just put all of our 1 man contractors out of business!!
We get it. Make sure area is contained if you are going to sand or scrape any potential lead based area. But this is going to kill these guys. & us. Classes are few & far between & contractors are in a wait mode until they get "certified"
But get this. the EPA says it is fine if you do it yourself. So I guess you & me.. who know "nothing" about paint containment are OK to do this work, but a contractor isn't.
Sorry, I know this is about food, but I appraise & have to give "cost to cure" on deficiencies & I can't even get anyone to quote anything anymore!
As a wise man once said.."The worst words in the English language are. I'm from the government & I am here to help"
& yeah, I'm with you guys.. come & get me, I'll throw rotten heirloom tomatoes at you!

Lisa,
Not surprising about the EPA, and yeah, unfortunately it seems like the government the past couple of decades is busy restricting rather than guaranteeing our freedoms. So, what you shared is really about the same thing. That is really too bad about your home, I hope you can find some way to get it worked on.

They would have to get past me, my son and d-in-law, and the most dangerous, my 2 grandsons. I wish them luck, cause they won't get in here.

This is just like the NAIS bill they tried to get passed. I will not register any of my animals. And I will make cheese and drink raw milk and paint my own house. Good grief, what is this crazy world coming to? That these people have nothing else to do but make people miserable and worried about paying the bills and feeding their families anymore. Come on, let us do what we know is right for us and our families!

Ok not meaning to gross anyone out, but the other night I learned something in my Forensic Science class that actually made me more determined to stop buying processed and prepackaged foods. We had a visit from an FDA investigator and he told us that they, the FDA, actually allow for a certain amount of animal and insect particles in all types of processed and prepackaged foods. Half of the class turned green (me included).
I would like to see the governement try to inforce this in my area were 90% of us grow our own and are simi to totally self suffeciant. Heck our Mayor makes and sells homemade goods, as do the police chief and his wife, that would be just to funny!!!!
All I have to say is let them try.

Melanie, ironic how its okay if the multi-national companies allow for a certain amount of contamination in the food supply, but don't trust people to process food from their homes. I think we have a little more incentive to properly process food than an impersonal company.

Isn't it funny that all these agencies and bills that are supposed to protect us, do exactly the opposite. It is all about control, they don't want us to feed ourselves and be healthy. They want us to eat their crap. The local food movement is growing and it's cutting out their business. The consumer is powerful, so they have to make laws to stop us.

Why not go out on a limb, that's where all the fruit is! "Mark Twain"

Hi Ladies!

I for one would never want to lose the right to plant my own plants in the ground, and I think they would have a VERY hard time enforcing this bill. Perhaps our energy would be a good positive force if we did a letter/phone call writing campaign to let our representatives know that not only to we appreciate our home grown (and Safe!) produce (thank you very much! LOL) but that we also would like our local law enforcement to be watching out for more threats than the local tomato grower or those dreadful people that fill your car with zuchinni if left unlocked during harvest season. (When isn't it harvest season for zuchinni! That stuff is so hardy!)

I think those of you who are saying it is unforceable forget what kind of satelite imaging is available right now just on Mapquest! I am fortunate that we have a large tree cover. I am not a fear type person but the technology is in place. The only way to really change things is to vote! and be aware of who the canidates are not just the propoganda presented.

It's all good!
