Hi everyone! I stumbled across this site by accident as I was looking for something else (I'll explain below), but what a happy accident! I live in a large old farmhouse on 17 acres in central MN. It is so beautiful out here and I love it. I grow my own vegetables, berries and flowers organically, and try to live simply. So nice to see so many kindred spirits here!
I do have a question for you - I hope it is appropriate to put this here. My fiance and I purchased this home and land together, but our relationship has since ended and now I live here alone. It is becoming more and more difficult for me to live here alone, as gas and heating fuel prices keep rising. What I was looking for when I stumbled across this site was a forum where I could post that I was looking for a roommate. I'm a little concerned about advertising just anywhere - I love my home and my land and don't want to have to deal with deadbeats, druggies, or anything of that sort. I'm looking for another single person who also wants to live in the country. I also am not currently using my 17 acres for much of anything (I board horses for my neighbors in the summer, but that's it). I'd love to find a roommate who sees the potential of this and wants to use the land productively - for their own venture or in partnership with me. Anyway, I'm hoping that some of you might have some ideas about where I could post a listing, or, if you by any chance know of someone who'd be interested in this, please let me know!
Anyway, I really look forward to the friendship and support offered on this site. Nice to meet all of you!

Welcome Melissa, Wanted to let you know about my acupunturist, Kari. She is 34 years old, single, has a couple dozen beef cattle, has 3 or 4 horses and boards about 3 or 4 more, and currently one roomate, but has had two in the past. She has made it work for her, and has been very much a win win situation for her. I know she's a strong woman and sticks to her guns, with roomates or boarders. She has contracts and stiff penalties for breaking the contract. (one I know of included losing ownership of a horse if boarding fees were not paid)
So my only advise is be strong and make sure stick to your guns! Enjoy the forum! KarenP

Welcome Melissa I am so glad to have you here. As it happens I stumbled across this site by accident to . Found MJ's book as i was waiting for my sons practice to finish. It has been an amazing discovery! These women (and men) are fantastic. You are right to post about a roommate here. If nothing else you will get plenty of advise.
Have you heard of the MN Living Green Expo? It is at the state fairgrounds this weekend. the web is www.livinggreen.org I will be there sunday looking around and taking some photos. Will post them here. It might be a good place to connect with some like minded people who would be interested in finding a house and land to share. We went last year and it was fantastic. There is so much to see.
Also we are having our First Annual Upper Midwest Get Together this August if you are interested. Just shoot me an email and I'll give you all the details.

Hello Melissa! Glad to hear from another woman from MN. I live in Northern MN. I am so jealous that you have horses, I just love being around them. Can't wait to hear more from you, Rose

Thanks for the welcome, all! Jenny - I went to college in Bemidji. It is so beautiful up there, although the winters are long and cold. KarenP - you give me hope. I'm not sure how to go about finding the right person, but at least I know it can be done! Thanks also to Rose, Beth and Leah for your support and ideas.
One more question - is there another topic area on this forum that might be appropriate to post for a roomie? I don't want to make you all read the same thing over and over, but would like to know the best place to put it for people who might be interested. Thank you!

Hello, Melissa! Welcome! I wish you lived closer because I would seriously consider moving to your farm. It sounds like everything I want to have someday! Is Hennessy your last name? It is my boyfriend's name and is spelled the same exactly. You'll learn alot here and meet some great ladies!

Hi Nicole! Thanks for the welcome. No, Hennessy is not my last name. It is the name of the cognac I used to drink when I was in England (I participated in a study abroad program in college). It was affordable there - pretty expensive here in the states.

HI, Melissa, Welcome to the sight, even though it was by accident, as you say. Things happen for a reason and this site seems to be meant for you.
I don't know much about looking for roommates and such, however, I did hear of a web sight where "farm-raised" individuals could find one another. More of a match-making service for like minded people, but they may have an area for just getting to know others for friends or partnerships. I don't really know, just an idea. Hopefully, I'm not too far off-base about that, don't want to send you down an undesireable path. Have you or anyone else ever heard of what I'm talking about?
Your place does sound very inviting, so I hope it will be just as inviting to someone who could be a real help for you - and visa versa. Glad to get to know you and that you found the forum.
Blessings on your search, in the meantime, keep us posted and we'll keep our eyes and ears open for you, too. :o)

Hi Lynda. Thanks for the idea. I don't think I'm familiar with the site you mentioned. If you or anyone has more information, let me know. I'd love to meet a guy with similar interests, but I've decided I'm not sitting around waiting for my knight in shining armor! Need to do things for myself.
Anyway, I've been to a number of places and asked lots of people how to find a roommate, and no one seems too sure how to do this. I just KNOW there's people out there who want to live in the country but can't quite afford it on their own and would love this opportunity. I just need to figure out how to connect with them. So again, any bright ideas, please pass them my way! Thanks all.
Melissa
