Wasn't sure where to post this, so I just figured I would post it here...
My daughter & I went to Seattle to (pre)celebrate my "29th"(snicker giggle) birthday and I came across this sweet book in a lovely Tea Shop.
"Tea with Jane Austen" by Kim Wilson
Since I enjoy the writings of Jane Austen I could not resist this book.
It has lovely insight about the daily goings on in Austens time as well as explains certain things that we might normally miss while reading her stories.
I particulary got a kick out of the "old version" recipe & explination for Pound Cake...as well as "a lump of sugar"
The pound cake recipe calls for a pound of butter, pound of flour, pound of sugar, eggs & carraway seeds...then it proceds to tell you to "beat well together with your hand for 1 hour, or you may beat it with a wooden spoon." (The London Art of Cookery, 1807)
All I can say is Thank Goodness for electric mixers!
As for the lump of sugar, sugar in those days was sold as compressed blocks and so one would break off a "lump" piece of sugar to add to their tea.
What is really amussing is given the high cost and covetedness of the tea, the lady of the household would often keep the tea in a special container under lock & key to keep the servants from pilfering the tea....
This book is a delightful read for all you J.A. fans & lovers of tea.

That sounds like such a fun book! Congrats!

I know in the middle ages the housewife would keep the salt under lock and key for the same reason. I am so glad that I can take such things for granted today!

Though if I ever buy fresh saffron I might keep that under lock and key!!

I have this book and being a Jane Austen fan it is a wonderful addition to my collection. I am thankful for mixers too.

ok, don't laugh, I was using a single square to T.P. as a page marker,,,,how's that for cheap! lol!
So today when I met up with the girls for Java my beloved neighbor, Julia Hayes, surprized me
with a sweet hand made page marker. Oh Thank you Julia!
Now I can mark the pages of my "Tea with Jane Austen" in style as the book so deserves!
