Today some of the garden got a make over. I made three big mounded rows to appease my husband. Normally I just flat plant, but he thinks that the rows need to be mounded. I have already found at least one benefit to this- I can pull the culverts between each mound with mulch/yard clippings to attract more worms. :D
So I have a row and a half (my garden is weird shaped due to some oddly laid out landscaping from pre-my time here) of carrot seeds planted, and I put six tomato plants in the gound. I am going to see how they do. I have been hardening them off and I think they will do really well outside. I buried them pretty deep, so I know there will be a couple weeks were they won't seem to be doing anything and then they will shoot up like crazy. I am just hoping they don't wilt and die. But when I tipped them out of their cups, they had filled the cups with roots without becoming root bound so I am hoping I caught them at a good stage :D
Then I planted watermelon seeds in my little dixie cups. I wanted to get them going but I won't be able to plant them until I get a new garden section planted. Oh and I also have about 10 dixie cups with lavendar seeds in them. I can't wait until the watermelon and lavendar seeds sprout!
I am going to ground sow a more bush like lavendar by our garage. I am hoping to soften it a bit since it is UGLY right now. :(
I think I am going to have to put some time in with the garden a bit every day as soon as we get home from work. Sometimes I wish I could take a week off and just get all my gardening done!!

Wow Alee - your part of Montana must be a lot warmer than here - our last frost isn't till May 15 - when is yours? I should get some cool season crops planted this week - onions, potatoes, lettuce etc. This season has been a lot less stressful because I didn't roto-till, just redug what I did last year, much easier. On average it is around May 15th so I might be jumping the gun a bit, but my gut says we have seen the last of the frost. This week the evening temps aren't going to get below 40, and we are going to have some high 70 degree weather during the day.
I am planting some cool weather crops in a corner of the yard that gets a bit of morning sun but stays cool and shaded during the summer. I think they will get enough reflected light to grow. Grass seems to do fine there.
Today was busy, but I still wish I had gotten more done. I was lazy in the morning and Nora was sick in the afternoon :(

I wanted to plant carrots today but DH was trapped in the garden all week with me. So we went riding for a little with his buddies on the motorcycle and then had a pitch-in style dinner here with them all. I guess my carrots will have to wait a day or so. You sure got alot accomplished. Makes me tired just readin about it!

I worked on the garden more today. I got two of the rows mulched and some radish seeds planted. I bought some german heirloom radish seeds. They are supposed to produce a baseball sized radish in a month. I am eager to see that!
I also dug over a small strip of ground that is right by the garage. I am planning on planting lavendar and sunflowers. Maybe I will do a mix of small and tall sunflowers with the lavender below and maybe some bee balm or butterfly bush. I just want something pretty and colorful because itis UGLY right now! I am combing through the dirt trying to get all the aggressive weed roots out. That patch has been a nemisis of mine since we moved in last year.
Tomorrow I need to make some more garden rows, get more tomatoes planted, get the seeds sown in the area by the garage and dig over the cool weather bed that I am making towards the back of the yard. Phew! I am glad I took a few days off of work so I could work in the garden!

Well my front flowers didn't survive the winter so I moved the mulch and the dead bulbs today and am debating whether I want to plant more tomato plants in front or actually make it JUST a flower area. Hmmm...Decisions decisions....
But I am excited to report that I saw my first strawberry blossoms today!! I am so excited! I hope my strawberries have spread a bit more so I have more than 5 plants! LOL

In my little strip of land by my UGLY garage I planted some Mammoth sunflowers and in between them and towards the back I planted hollyhocks. Then I did a strip of lavender and in front I planted some snap dragons. Oh and a little corner planted to carrots.
This is all seed, so I am hoping I get at least a 50 percent germination rate. It's hard to wait for those little seedlings to grow. I am trying to get a riot of colors to create a misty foam of flowers to draw the eye away from the ugly garage.
I am trying to decide where else I am going to plant my sunflowers. I am amazed that it can take up to 90 days for them to bloom (from planting) so that means I won't even actually have sunflowers until August!! At least I will have a colorful fall show!! This fall I am going to plant some fall/spring bulbs to hold the place while the slower growing stuff fills in.
This is really my first year of really doing much with flowers. I am excited!!

Lucky!
It's such a good feeling to get your seeds into the soil---
Too blasted cold here I don't dare plant anything yet even though some of my hollyhocks are coming up as well as the hosta, lilies and even my everbearing strawberries are up and running!
I did plant 4 short rows of garlic (couldn't help myself) and they are peeking through too.
My DH got carried away with the tiller and worked up some ground next to the west side of the house for squash and cucumbers as they take up too much precious space in my raised beds. We have only a small portion of any kind of lawn now---makes me smile

Go Melody!
I feel pretty safe with seeds going into the ground because if it is too cold they just stay dormant. This fall I am going to winter sow my carrot seeds. We have a pretty short growing season. We can see snow as early as late September/Early October so I keep trying to eek out as much of a growing season as I can.
I am also thinking of setting up one of MaryJane's green houses over my garden during the winter so I can extend it out even further.
I would love it if I could harvest into Novemember and then start harvesting again in February!!

Well I am very impressed with my flower seed! It took them less than a week to emerge from the soil! Now almost two weeks later I have new leaves poking up every day. I can't wait for the seedlings to actually get further above the ground and growing. This week is supposed to be off and on rain :( But at least the ground will be getting lots of moisture. By the time the sun comes out next week, they should have everything they need to put on a growth spurt. I am still sort of bummed that I won't get flowers until late July or August though! LOL

I am so glad your flower seeds came up. Alee! That's just something really nice to look forward to now. All my sunflower seeds are poking up. About 3" tall now. I can't wait for those huge flower heads, then the American Goldfinch comes. They get yellower with every sinflower seed they eat, it seems to me.
Have fun in the garden!

Last night I went out to check on my seedlings in the garage. They are nice and cozy in their little room and are looking good. I am so glad they are inside right now since it is NASTY outside. High winds the last couple of days and a hard rain last night. This morning the wind is blowing again. I am looking forward to this weekend when it is supposed to be nicer. I am keeping an eye on my 10 day forecast though, I am hoping the wind dies down a bit. I don't want to put more seedlings out only to have them die of wind damage. I guess I need to start saving milk jugs as protective barriers as the transition from garage/greenhouse to in ground. At this rate I will have enough by next spring for as many plants as I started! :D

DH and I have been spending a lot of time getting the expanded portion of the garden going. I have been harvesting baby lettuce and spinach for the Farmers Market and peas for us. The radishes were done about three weeks ago but I have some more coming up. I am doing pretty much square foot gardening techniques this year. I am doing the "hedgerow" system for the tomatoes since I can't ever seem to keep them staked properly or contained in a cage. This week I got two kinds of beans planted, four kinds of summer squash and two kinds of melons. As soon as the lettuce, spinach and peas are done, I can get the rest of the stuff planted. I am going to try to get the tomatoes in the ground this week too. They are doing pretty good in their pots so far. We had a cold snap a week or so ago too but, luckily, I put everyone back in the cold box and they all came through fine. Later on, when everything really gets growing, I will have to post a picture.

Wow Candy! That is awesome!
This morning I woke up to SNOW of all things. UGH. I hate snow in the spring. Love it in the winter but snow in the spring is just WRONG! Snow in the Mountians please, rain down here!
So my upstairs tomatoes are doing AWESOME! They are in some garden soil in a window box in my attic eastern window. Right now they are about 2 foot tall and strong. My other seedlings are still pretty tiny- only about 4 inches tall but they are now in a southern window in their own improved soil and with a heater keeping the garage warm. I am hoping to get them installed in the garden within the next two weeks. This SHOULD be the last big frost but who knows.
I wish I had your warm weather right now Candy!!

I wish I had your 2-foot tall tomatoes! LOL!!
I agree, snow this time of year is just WRONG! And I don't know about the rest of you girls but I'm tired of this dang wind! :(

It's snowing there too? What is going on? Do you usually get snow this time of year? I can not even imagine having snow here now. But would actually like a little. I hope it stops soon.
