A friend just called me and let me know she has a chick she hatched a couple weeks ago (one chick out of 40 eggs - incubator problems) and he is lonely and living in a tote in her house. She found out we had chicks (they will be two years old on Sunday) and wondered if I would take him off her hands to raise with our batch of chicks.
My question is: Can I safely introduce this chick to my other eight chicks? They seem to be about the same age. I don't have a problem taking the chick in, I just don't want to bring it home if the other chicks are going to beat up on it or peck it to death. What do you ladies think??

I brought 2 Buffs home 2 weeks ago. And brought 2 barred rocks home today, they arent having any problems yet. Just keep an eye on him and I think he would be ok

Introduce the chick at night, when they are asleep. Just put the new chick in the coop, and when they get up they just think she is part of the flock. I have had really good luck doing this, but I still keep an eye on them for a few days, Carol
Forget buns of steel, I'd rather have buns of cinnamon!

So.....here's the issue. We brought the baby home. Oh my gosh, it is half the size of our Red chicks but the same age. It is sooooo tiny. And it has feathers on its feet. My friend we got it from has NO idea what it is. Anyhow, the baby chicks were all sacked out and sleeping, so we snuck the baby in their brooder...oh my gosh, they immediately woke up and started pecking the heck out of it. I'm assuming because its so small. So we set up ANOTHER brooder (you should have seen the look on hubby's face) and put this little lone baby chick by itself. But now I feel like we haven't helped it because now its alone just like it was back at my friends house. So...someone suggested that we run to Tractor supply and get a couple brand new baby chicks and stick them in with this lone baby chick so he's got some buds. I called TS a little bit ago and they just got another shipment of chicks that are just a few days old, so they would be small like this little guy/gal, but definitely not the same breed. (It would be more reds.) Is that a good idea, or would that just be causing more problems?? Should I just leave it alone and see what happens as they get older??

Hi! From my totally newbie experience I would say go for it. I brought home 5 on Wed (hatched Tue.) and then one today (hatched yesterday) and everything went well. The latest is a bit bigger than the smallest from 2 days ago. They are all different breeds. Nothing negative happened.
Plus, your adopted chick will be the big one and I'd think that would be to her benefit.
Please let us know how it goes. & good for you for taking her in. She deserves a great life. She must be a real trooper to be the sole hatchee. Sounds darling with feathered feet!

Poor little thing. Out of 40 it must be a fighter and have a great will to live. So I vote for a few more that are the same size. It sounds like the Cochin? Don't they have the fluffy feet? Ir Frizzle? There are so many different breeds out there now. But I wish you lots of luck with your new adventure.

There's strength in numbers so even if you jut bought this one chick a buddy or two that would take the pressure off.
I have been introducing chicks and more chicks for the past month but all in multiples, and haven't had any problems yet.
