That's a strange thing to say, but if you eat dandelions, then you do eat weeds.
This comes with a funny story.
The other day I was in the hardware store over in the gardening area. There was this older man there that was loading up on weed killer and I do mean loading up. He had a big bag of some off brand weed killer and two large bottles of round-up. As i was standing there looking, he made the coment that he just hated dandelions and that they should all be erased from the earth. Well, me being how I am about all good things to eat. I mentioned that I like dandelions. that they tasted really good in a salad and that they were very good for your body. Well, let me tell you, he looked at me like I had a extra eye or something and nearly ran some poor woman over trying to get away from me. I think next time I will just wear a shirt that reads, "I EAT WEEDS!"
Anyone else have a funny story like that? Please do share it with us.

Nicki-what a hoot, that is hilarious. You freaked that poor man out! I bet he tells that story a few times.

I love it!!! My grandmother hated dandelions because when she was growing up very poor sometimes that was all they had to eat! She erradicated them from her yard! Not one dandelion would date grow near her! I think you should market that T-shirt!

That's funny - I was going to buy some French dandelion seeds this year. I love to look at them too, they look so cheerful!!

Nieki, people are so silly. I hate to go down the pesticide aisles anymore. They stink and make me have a headache. I was jsut weeding in my lettuce and spinc=ach bed and left all the dandelions. I'll just mix the leaves in salads. I love them. I remember my dad had a girlfriend that loved dandelion tea. Us kids would go pick the flowers for her. I drink the tea almost every day now. I think it helps with the allergies. And I love the jelly. I might just have to get some of those French seeds and plant me a row.

what a hoot, you really should market those shirts. LOL. I just finished 4 jars of dandelion syrup, got a couple of bottles of wine in the pantry, and tried cooking the greens for the first time. discovered I don't care for the greens much, but I'm going to try them in a salad and see if I like that better. hope to get some chickweed tincture started this weekend. they say it's good to help with weight loss, and I could sure use that. LOL. enjoy you weeds !!! phyllis

Hey, can you use dandelion kind of like spinach in a cooked dish? I'm thinking of using it to supplement the spinach in my spinach lasagna? Steamed maybe? I've got so many of 'em I'd like to do something beside curse them or trash them. Made the jelly (syrup this time, actually)and am going to rinse and dry the roots for tea.

I think there's a PBS TV show called I eat weeds and seeds or something like that. I don't watch much TV, but I remember seeing it last summer for sure.

Hi Amy, you can use the greens cooked like spinach. the smaller, younger leaves aren't as bitter as the bigger ones. I've seen recipes for using them like spinach in quiche and other things. I've seen the t.v. thing you mentioned, interesting. I'm planning to try the dried root coffee drink too. take care, Phyllis
