Raining cats and dogs here in the North Woods so I decided to build a fire in our little wood stove that we have in the corner of our living room....Must have gotten a little toasty because WHOOSH out flies a lovely little brown wren!
Truman, our Jack Russell terrier went absolutely bonkers as she went banging into the living room windows.
I called my DH at work which is about 3-minutes away, and he managed to guide her out through one of the windows.
My pulse is up and my heart is still pounding. Poor thing!
First time that's happened and hopefully the last!

I doubt it, Melody....I have a family of "house wrens" that get inside every now and again. I always know when I come home and all the things on my desk and end tables etc...are on the ground or knocked over because the cats have been running "on high" to get to the little wren!!!
I often think house wrens are some sort of "familiar" for me...they're in my house, they meet me in the tree by my office door, they peer at me from the feeder on the windowsill.

We had a flicker in the house once . . . which is a type of woodpecker, so that is a bit frightening! It was sitting on the window sill by our kitchen sink and when I went to the sink one morning, it flew out at me, scaring me half to death. I immediately screamed, "Big Bird!" (Stupid, I know . . . but it is what came out in my startled state . . . ) and my husband, who is a paramedic, thought I yelled "Big Burn!" and came running to aid me! LOL! There is a new book out at costco called "Big Burn" and he asked if I wrote it!
Last summer we actually had a hummingbird in our home . . . he was terrified and we were so afraid he was going to kill himself as he kept throwing himself into the bay window. We actually have a pic of him perched on my hubbies fingers as he caught him and took him outside to safety. So glad I got a pic to prove he held a hummingbird! I will try to find it and put it on my blog.

Brenda....very, very funny story! I laughed out loud!
I know what you mean by "startled state!" When I called my DH for the life of me I could barely make myself understood to their secretary! I used to be pretty calm and sedate, but not anymore----I AM getting old!
My husband is the complete opposite-He used to be a volunteer rescue squad driver and he is soooooo calm and collected. I envy him that. |

HA! In 2008 my husband did Ironman and all of our parents came and it was a big family thing! We were at the event all day long! In the spring we leave a door cracked for the cats to come and go as they please, and we had done that that day. My mom and dad left the event a little earlier to go home. When they arrived, they found feathers everywhere. Apparently, the door was cracked enough for a pigeon or dove to fly in and of course, the cats had to try to catch the bird! Can you just picture it!?

I had a similar experience, two birds flew out the fireplace and I was in the bathroom and came out and my cat was going bonkers, jumping the air, flying off the furniture. It took me a minute to look up and see 2 frantic birds flying around. I called my brother and he came over and helped me and I put the cat in the basement so she wouldn't hurt herself or the poor birds. My cat was mad at me for the rest of the day!

I had a starling come into my house once. I called my mom & neighbor and they said I was on my own, My girlfriend Diane came up with her husbands fishing net and caught it and let it loose outside. It was so funny but scary too.
