In honor of my birthday next week (I will be 61 OUCH) I have decided to stop coloring my hair and let the real me shine through.
I have totally embraced this idea. I'm tired of the mess, the chemicals and the expense.
My natural color has always been a warm dark brown and I have covered the roots for a few years now.
Since I wear it quite short, it will probably only take a couple of haircuts to get to teh real color.
It is bound to be very salt and pepper or maybe waaaaay more salt than pepper.
Soooo. my kids are going to have a fit, I am already anticipating this.
So will my mom who hasn't seen her own natural color in at least 50 years.
So, whaddya think?
Am I nuts to try this?
Am I going to need to change all my makeup colors?
Need some feed back from my farmgirl friends

Michele!
Go for it! I did! I am so happy that I did!... ever since I stopped coloring, my hair is beautiful and soft... My Mom finally stopped doing hers ....
as far as your make up.. it should go with your skin tones.. not your hair.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU are NOT NUTS... nutty, maybe.. but only because the rest of us are too... we love each other! (giggles)

Just "DO" it!!!!!

I stopped coloring on my 60th birthday, last year, and have been growing out my hair, for the first time in memory. Love it! No makeup, just lots of moisturizer. I wear a lot of smiles...that makes everyone prettier!

I am 55 I still have my natural dark brown hair with only one or 2 silver hairs.
I always told God I would never color my hair; especially if it was silver like one of my grand parents had.
My son said aren't you going to color your hair??
I told him No!!
I deserved every silver hair I had ; cause he put it there !!!
and that is the honest truth and he is still putting it there !! ha.
One time I was getting my hair cut at the former hair cutters
Her Mom said ; she would love to have that color on her hair.
Her daughter said
That is her own color , I was in my middle 40's then. hug sheila

I am thinking the same thing, but I still have 2 boxes of hair color that my neighbor gave me, and 2 boxes I had. I buy the $3. Revlon and my DH does it for me. I like the way my hair feels after I color it but I want to let it go natural. I am 58 and pretty sure most of my hair is salt. I don't wear make-up usually maybe 3 or 4 times a year. My DH is 9 years younger than I so I wanted to look closer to his age. He will be 50 in July and he has lost a lot of hair. I have the opposite problem my mom thinks I'm crazy for coloring my hair. Let me know what you decide and if you like it or love it or flat out hate it.

Hope all your days are Sunnydays.

Michele, Happy Birthday! Let it go, see how you like it. My dad uses a shampoo for silver hair to keep the "yellow" out and his grey is beautiful, so maybe use a shampoo like that ever so often. I unfortunately inherited "wire hair terrier" greys, which started appearing back in highschool, lucky me. As for makeup, silvery hair is more "winter" so you might just need to use cooler colors. If you don't like it, you can always color it again. Have fun, post the results.

No more hair color for me for quite a few years and I love the gray streaks---I have my mother's color of gray which is divine! I feel experienced, self confident-unpretentious and wise!

And, I have not cut my hair in almost three years.

Love it, love it, love it! My hair feels healthy-looks better- and it is definitely MY look.

Now if I could just lose a few pounds!

Go for it Michele...Embrace it!

Did any of you have really dark hair before you stopped coloring? I suspect I am most "salt". we get grey early in my family. I have little Aunties in their 90's who have jet black hair because they cant stop coloring....When I need to color my hair, its because my hair looks so thin when the grey shows through and it also makes my complexion seem ill.

I know a lady that has let her hair go all silver. Her hair is so long- down to her lower back and it is BEAUTIFUL! I think your hair is as beautiful as you make it- In other words if you hate the way it looks it won't look as beautiful- but if you have confidence in your look, then it will shine out and make any hairstyle beautiful!

My hair is coming in silver...I only wish it would hurry up! I like silver, just not the streaky salt and pepper look =P

Happy Birthday! My mother, who is 62, colors her hair...and has since 1962. I'm not exactly sure WHAT her real color is, but Janice (Miss Bee Haven) can attest, sometimes it's Cherry Red, sometimes it's Blonde...right now I think it's blond--but my mother is "fixy" and she really loves clothing and makeup and jewelry (I know...I too, wonder if I'm her biological child!)...now, my mother in law is 61, and she let her hair go "natural" on her 60th birthday. It's thick, and lovely and is a dark shade of pewter mixed with lighter wisps of silver. It took some getting used to, and she had to leave her former hair dresser for the badgering, but I think she's much happier, and isn't a slave to the color cycle.

If you like the color, why not go for it? You can always change it, you know...that's a Farmgirl's prerogative!!!!!

you go girl! I have short hair and decided to do the same thing and my mom who is 64 and has short hair did too. It is a bit salt and pepper but it looks great. I think it will be beautiful as you are.

I quit coloring mine a year or so ago-the hair dye just wouldn't stay on the silver in my bangs, and I felt like I was wasting $$$ not to mention all the dire warnings they put on dye boxes now. If this is what you want,go for it,tho I have to smile as I wouldn't let my mom quit doing hers and I colored it for her in her later years. Didn't want to see her get "old",I guess. If you don;t like you can always color it again.

I am going to be 40 in August and I decided that I am not going to color. It is getting gray. My daughter calls me sparklie!!

I think gray or white is pretty too. I have short hair.

Have a wonderful birthday!!!
