the mother magazine i just received has an article on gmo.70 percent of processed foods contain gmo. an independent study showed that round up was higher than allowed in fish. it has a strong influence on the endocrine system. this is the hormone and mood and brain center. we wonder why so much depression these days. kids maturing too fast. the cancers. astounding to me what we eat compared to other countries.i know most farmgirls have addressed this already. other threads. i thought this was an excellent small tidbit of info. just a thought sherrye what are yours? some believe that this is a good thing gmo. i do not know but one person thinking that way myself.

I just read that article the other day when my copy came. I think its a bad idea. Europe already said no to them, so I think that just shows how much we don't need them.

The problem with GMOs like these are the patents and profits. Believe it or not there are some good ones. We discussed these in my biology class last semester. One GMO that has helped is golden rice to poor countries. It's a cross with dandelion and gives Vit A which they were lacking. A lot of heirlooms were crossed at one time or another. The mustard plant is what lead to cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts! but I think today when we see GMO our thoughts go to the corporations like Monsanto that have breed sterility into their seeds so farmers can't save seed and the chemicals like round-up. It's a shame really and yes makes me mad. I hadn't heard of the golden rice until class and it made me feel a little better that there are some people trying to do real good.

I personally stay away from ANYTHING GMO. It's sad, IMO, that nothing in the stores is labeled. People don't even know they're eating GMO's! I think if more people were made aways, they'd buy less of those products. But the gov't likes to hide those things from us. (That is a whole nother ball of wax though!)
Pretty much anything soy or corn that is not organic is GMO...and can you guess how many things contain soy?? Yep, quite a few!

The movie Food, Inc. talks about GMO's, and so does the book "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle". Really opens our eyes to what's going on. I read somewhere (I can't remember where I saw it, but will try to find it, that Canola is going the same way.... that's what I cook with. :(
I can do my small part in not supporting these products by not buying corn or soy products, and only buying heirloom seeds but it can be difficult. I am in the process of reading the above book though, and it really amazes me what that family ate in the year the book was written about! I am re-thinking what I cook and bake. My problem is my terrible sweet tooth! ;)
Thanks for posting this Sherrye, I'll go pick up the magazine so I can read the article.

did you gals know most milk in big box stores is NOT FRESH it is dried powdered milk reconstituted. they keep the cream and boost the milk with extra powder to call it whole milk. so if that is not bad enough...what about the water they are using to make it liquid? does it have chlorine in it?is it safe?food is not food anymore. its corporation money just another thought. gotta love them goats and cows sherrye

This thread is where I live - I am amazed at the horrible way our food is being tampered with. I had read about the milk thing and that is why I try to purchase local milk but with all the rules and economy most have gone under. I did have a milk goat herd of nine for many years when my sons where here but now that it is just myself I can not get all the farmwork done and do milking while also running my fiber business. I am on the hunt for a new place to purchase shares but so far the nearest is over 50 miles away... The powers in control - GMO's are going to put us under unless we make changes quickly. I am with you gals - spread the word - GMO's are not the answer or our friend dispite their madison avenue marketing.

Ewww, I didn't know that about milk. We've been drinking raw milk for the past 4 years so I haven't bought milk at the grocery store in forever. That is just so gross.
Not to mention the chlorine and flouride in the water.......YUCK!

what is truly weird to me is... they pull apart the molecules. they remove fat separate. then they put the fat molecule separate from the carb molecule. then they mix it up. depends on what they are making.milk or cheese etc. i would think that lactose intolerance would be a given. milk not milk. true some are truly intolerant but maybe some not. just cannot digest what they have done to dairy. just a thought sherrye

My husband and I bought the Food, INC after watching it online and we have been passing it around to everyone we can get to watch it because it's so informative and so many live unaware of our "food" and whats being done! We've been trying to be so careful about GMO'S and eating as fresh or natural as we can...but it's difficult to find some things fresh... or organic...so we are learning to do without. We would really like to get a plot of land to homestead more, right now we have less than a 1/4 acre and are working to make that as efficient as possible...which brings alot of pleasure...and creates alot of learning moments to teach my little ones - 4,3,1 - Thanks for the insight and encouragement gals!

This is all very interesting. I posted in the Barnyard about trying to feed my animals organic feed because I'm sure the corn is GMO mostly. And so if I am milking my goats and drinking the milk won't it go through the milk? Or the meat? Or the eggs? I don't know. We try to eat right and grow all our food but it still sneaks in somehow or another. No matter how careful we are. I am so thankful though that we have raw milk. I know most people can't do this and I feel very fortunate. I just wish you all lived near me so you could get raw goat and cow milk.

i have changed my feed to a mix i make. i use alfalfa pellets oats barley sunflower seeds and dry molasses and kelp and epsom salts and de and now i need another calcium source to go with yhe kelp. they had to get used to it. now they love it. i wet the dry molasses and pour over top. messy but better. oats and barley are not at such a big risk of being gmo.the alfalfa is not gmo so feed is a little safer. i am working towards a mix that is grain free. i have read that grain in rumens in not a good thing. also grain is not naturally in their diet. it changes the good fats to sat fat within days. our beef runs 1.9 percent sat fat. compared to grain finish of 9 percent. our cholesterol levels for us both are good. processed food including animal causes cholesterol problems.i lost production in milk for a couple days then it came back up. chickens eat a non gmo natural pellet. we pay 8.99 a bag.there is a feed mill close. his goal is to carry non gmo feed. i am sure glad of that. still i like seeing real seeds etc. in their feed bowl. we raise our pigs similar but am learning how to pasture raise pigs now.i watched king corn and it totally scared me. they tested the carbon in 2 college students. their carbon mass was corn. so i would bet since it came from the meat that ate corn and high fructose corn syrup and eggs that yes you are gmo. it is thought that no one in the united states is absent from gmo in their body. king corn food inc wallmart and the credit card movie should be seen by all. just my opinion....just a thought sherrye

I would be your first customer in the morning - heck I would even help you milk.. I know the frustration of trying to get feed for your animals that is not from GMO's, pre-pelleted feeds and now it is even impossible to get organic hays.. Over the last five years organic operations in my neck of the woods have gone under or switched to spraying the crud out of things. The amount of time, energy and cost is just about ready to put me under and things do not look like they are changing for the good. I can not believe that folks do not make the connect with what their animals eat and how their health is. Are we really that stupid?? Don't you love the looks you get when you ask the feed store why they don't carry none GMO Organic feed - they look at you like you have three heads...

If you google "agenda 21" you'll find that some government agencies aren't there to protect/help us. It is SO important to support your local farmers as well as grow some (if not all) of your fruits and vegetables at home. I feel like I'm at home when I read your posts in this forum. Sometimes I feel like a lone voice out here.
