Hello ladies,

My friend Dorothy showed me this site. She is far more experienced in the farming world than I am but I am learning. I have two children that I stay home with. My daughter is 7 and is in the first grade. My son is almost 9 months old. Big age gap I know. I was a single mom before my Prince Charming came and rescued me and we had a son together. I am the founder and president of our local animal shelter. I also work as a veterinarian assistant when the traveling vets visit (we don't have a resident veterinarian). I recently resigned from my job at the fire department so that I could spend more time with my family and get our farm started. We have several critters of our own. Three dogs, 3 cats, 1 house bunny, and 2 horses. I am going to attempt to raise some guinea keets this summer. I have also started my first garden. Dorothy has been guiding me through this.

I live in a small touristy community in Alaska. We have 3 acres down a dirt road (which is hard to come by in Skagway :-) I joined this group to get some "farmgirl" ideas and meet some new friends. I look forward to chatting with everyone!!!! I will probably have lots of silly questions!!

Welcome Katherine
We are getting more and more people from alaska. I am from the Homer Area and love to see the even though we have farming and growing challenges in alaska people are still doing it. Dorothy is so nice she even faxed the plans for cold frames for my garden. you are very lucky to know her in person. What kind of horses do you have?

Hi Katherine, welcome aboard! It's true, there are more and more Alaska girls joining the forum. Do tell us more about your adventures with your first garden! I thought I had troubles in Canada, but you must have your share of challenges up north.
Look forward to chatting with you!

Thank you ladies for the warm welcome!!! It is good to see fellow Alaskan farm girls. And yes, Dorothy is not only an excellent gardener and talented artist but she is an amazing friend. I am very lucky and proud to know her in person. I have started some chives and basil indoors. I am mainly doing flowers outside right now and need to get my butt in gear and put out some peas. I have an old Whiskey barrell and an old flip top school desk that I am putting some flowers in. I thought it would look cute. I will post some pics once/if they start to grow.

Thanks again ladies!!!!!!

Welcome, Katherine - it IS fun to have farmgirls from all over - and now it looks like there are for sure enough for an Alaska chapter. It sounds so beautiful up there, and I look forward to hearing about all that you're doing!

XOXO, Libbie

You are all so nice. Very much appreciated. I am a member of yahoo horse group and I always post questions and no one answers. The ladies spend most of their time fighting over "he said/she said".

Alaska is very beautiful!!! I couldn't imagine living any other state.

It brings a smile to my face to come to this website and check the chat board. I look forward to learning new ideas and meeting new friends.

Best Wishes~Katherine
