There are so many places I could've posted this but I think this forum is the best place.
I've had a heck of a problem with flies this winter. I think it's because we heat with wood and it's so warm that they never die. So I've started searching for a way to rid myself of them and always came back to the fly strip. But really, who wants THAT hanging in the house? So I repurposed.....

Natural Fly Strips
You'll need:
A scrap of denim jeans ( a leg works great )
sewing notions
Metal gromment
heavy duty string or thin rope, ribbon etc
Essential Oils of Citronella, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass and Lavender

A piece of denim from the legs from a cast out pair of jeans. Mine measured 6" wide by 40" long cut. Fold in half wrong sides together and sew closed, like a tube. Turn right side out fold ends under to complete tube. You should have an empty completely sewn tube of denim. At the end of tube, insert your metal gromment. Thread in your string, ribbon, whatever.

In the kitchen mix together a blend of citronella x 40 drops, peppermint x 20 drops, eucalyptus x 20 drops, lemongrass x 20 and lavender x 10 in a small spray bottle.
Thoroughly staturate the denim tube with the oil blend. Hang from a hook in the ceiling or from wrought iron hooks in the garden. I did mine from denim, but you could use scraps of vintage table linens, calico's (not as sturdy and fade in sun) or anything. You could do a bunch in red white and blue for a summer picnic or all in white for an outdoor wedding. Very simple and effective...and good for Mother Earth!

Thank you soo much Dawn! I knew a farmgirl could do it! Do you think it would be alright to do this in my goat barn?
Hugs,

This thing is, the flies aren't gonna 'stick'. They are going to be repelled. I honestly don't see why not.

Thanks for this recipe Dawn! I am going to mix some up in a water base and use it as a fly repellant spray for my horse this summer.
