He is so good. He is 18 months old now and the love of our lives. His vision is good, not great, but good. We are so thankful that he can see at all. His actuall condition is caled "congenital nystagmus" the defintion is "invouluntary movement of the eyes" His brain doesn't tell his eyes what to do so they just move randomly all of the time. I hardly notice it anymore, but every mow and then, he looks at me with a big goofy grin and his "jiggly eyes" and I can't help but smile at this beautiful boy God blessed us with.
the diagnosis for now is that he will do fine in the general aspects of life, but regular book print will pose a problem and he probably won't ever be able to drive. The eye specialist we saw at the childrens hospital put it very plainly. "if you are driving down the highway in a rainstorm and your wipers don't work, you can still sort of see, but you shouldn't be driving" this is how Oliver sees the world.

My hubby lost his left eye in an accident. So I can kind of relate. He has no depth persption, so he is wavering on stairs.
But he has been this way since we met. I've not know him any other way. When someone mentions it, I have to think about it. You forget it rather fast.

thanks Amy....we figure that this is the way he was born and he won't know any different....I has opened our eyes (no other way to say it LOL!!) to the different aspects of visual impairments and makes me thankful that he isn't sick...there is no pain involved with this.

Oh, wow, Melanie. That's better vision than I thought he had.
Speaking of eye problems and driving, my great-uncle had a stroke in his twenties which left him with permanent double vision. He went right on running his farm and even driving. Not that I'm saying anyone with vision problems should get behind the wheel! But it's amazing what people can adapt to. |

yes, his vision has come a long way. He was considered legally blind for awhile....dr's aren't sure what changed that....hmmmm, I think prayer helped!!!

Thanks for letting us know how Oliver is doing. I was thinking about him too. I have had very bad eyesight my whole life. I don't have depth perception and without glasses or contacts everything is a massive blur for me. Even with contacts or glasses I am about 20/40 in one eye and 20/30 in the other. I drive very carefully, read large print books when possible and keep a magnifying glass with me at all times. As the others have mentioned, one learns to adapt and get on with life. I'm sure Oliver will do just fine!

good to hear DAwn!! and I'm glad you shared your visual accuity. Oliver's accuity is 20/100. he motors along just fine and most would not even know about his visual impairment. He is such a blessing to our lives!
