Count me in. I have fabric. I will go through it to see if I have any wool. I just found this new drink. Expensive to buy, would love to make my own. Debbie |

Just wanted to post an update for any new owners of kombucha cultures: it is best to remove the SCOBY and its liquid from the shipping bags as soon as possible and put them in a glass container. The short term plastic isn't harmful and in my past experience, much more likely to not leak than shipping in a glass container. But the SCOBY can start reacting with the plastic if left too long. I apologize for not thinking to mention this before. It is fine if you do not start the new batch right away, it can sit covered with a cloth or paper towel for quite some time. But also do not refrigerate the culture, as this can unbalance the ratio of bacterias and yeasts. Room temp is best. I am going to put this in my instructions as well but thought I would mention it here too.

Hello Catherine, I tried the first batch Yummy!!!! Even got DH to try it and he has decide that we should start a continuous brew batch so he can drink it too. Hehehe!!! Made him a believer, toot sweet! I do have a question. The first batch I took 3 bottles from the store bought Kombucha, cleaned them, poured the Kombucha into them, added juice to 2 of them, capped them and put them to sit. On the 2 with the juice I have bubbly floaters on top. Is that the new Scoby's you talk about in your directions? The plain one has nothing on it. It has been 3 days since I put them into the bottles to sit. I did open them to burp them also. Thank you again for the Scoby. I have a second batch a brewing. I will be sending you fabric out in the next day or so.

Betty Jo, that's cool about your husband getting on the bandwagon! I think the only reason overly sweet soda pop is so popular is because there aren't many other choices if you are running around, and we as a society have just gotten used to it. I love my KT for a healthy flavored drink without all those nasty chemicals! OK, I need to step off my soapbox....
It does sound like either the beginnings of a new SCOBY are forming in your juice bottles, or even perhaps just the extra fermentation fueled by the juice is creating spent yeast ooglies (my technical term lol). Three days, actually now that I think about it, more likely spent yeast and tannins rather than new SCOBY, might be too soon to really see that. No worries but if the ooglies bother you, before you drink it you can strain them out. Sometimes our innate aversion to slime takes over LOL!! I think fruit juice in particular really gets things going in a frenzy, and often adds more carbonation. I add grape juice to my tibicos grains sometimes and they go NUTS. But that's a whole other topic!!
Oh pooh, it's time for me to get in gear here and get to work. I rather stay home and craft!!

| I realy didn't know what this was, but when I was a traveling nurse working in New Mexico in the early 90s, my landlady had some and gave me a taste. It was okay to me but not wonderful and when Floyd was offered some, he said, "You're not getting me to drink something that looks like a dead rat!" lol |

| I feel like I need to apologize about the above comment, Obviously, I don't know enough about it to close my mind on the subject of something that might be good for me. If you can, would you send me a small sample with instructions. I have lots of fabric to trade. Maybe something you would need. |

LOL - Oleta, you don't need to apologize. A lot of folk love kombucha but I know a few who simply do not, even after braving a taste :) I got a good laugh from the dead rat comment so don't worry! It IS a bit strange, especially at first. If you want to try brewing some, shoot me your address in a private message and I will be glad to send one out next week. But there's no pressure!
Michelle, I am so excited! I will get to test my book knowledge on this at last! Read a lot on cleaning sheared fleece and processing it, but you know how that goes. Reading and doing are sometimes a horse of a different color!

OK, so I have been trying to figure out for some time how to post pics to the forum without joining Photobucket. I failed lol. BUT after I joined and saw how the code was written, I was able to go back to my Flicker account and write the code correctly from there. The instructions in the help section are redundant and thus technically incorrect but I finally got it to work, so I thought I'd post a pic of a 4 day old SCOBY in one of my earliest batches. I do remember that the weather was real warm, so don't be worried if your is growing slower. But sometimes it helps to see what to expect. Most of you have probably gotten past this stage already but I am still getting requests trickling in so I thought it wouldn't hurt to share even at this late date.

That's funny. There are so many myths about it going around! I think it's because there isn't much written that's original, it's just folk repeating what they heard or what they read elsewhere. Just goes to show that you don't know until you try sometimes! I am always playing with flavors, my latest are a green coconut tea and a maple flavored black tea. I always am sure to keep tea pure cultures so I can start from scratch and can share, but I so love ecperimenting. AND it's so much safer than second fermentations! Glad you are enjoying yours :)

well, I finally tasted mine and it is pretty good and it is covered with a gray culture like you posted. I used several teas, green mostly, an earl grey, reg tea-cheap kind, no flavored teas. Floyd won't even look at it! |

Sure Maggie, just shoot me a private email with your addie (or hers if you want me to mail it to her directly). I can go to the post office on Friday. I have been asking for quilting cotton in blues, greens, and/or browns in barter but if you don't have that we can work something out :)

| I would like a culture if you still have some - I sent you an email - oops forgot the address! My husband had had hodgkins twice the last resulting in a stem cell transplant - we drink a "green drink" I concoct 2 or 3 times a week - cabbage, granny smith apple and collar green - it is an acquired taste - just tastes green! I sent you an email - Becky |

I got a package of blue and brown calico today.....no note or return name on the package so I am afraid I do not know who sent it LOL. Just wanted to say thank you and let you know it arrived safe and sound. I will enjoy working these into my developing quilts!

Hi Catherine, are you still trading Kombucha cultures? I don't have any quilting cotton to trade, but do you see anything in my Etsy store you would be interested in?

Catherine,
L-O-V-E the KT. Can't get DH to try it yet, but over time he'll give in...lol. I'd love to see a pic of your quilt when you finish it. Thanks again for the SCOBY:)
