My daughter is pregnant with her second daughter, Payton. They are stationed at Fort Hood, TX. She has had nothing but crap and problems with the doctors at the hospital/clinic there. The other day she went in for her weekly "non-stress" test and they had her hooked up to the sonogram for over 2 hours. She has to have these tests because she has high blood pressure, but she's had it for years and nobody has done anything about it before. They ask her stupid questions and she tells them she's not a doctor, what do they want her to do about it?
Anyway, all of this has something to do with Payton's heart beat. It's too slow or hard to find or something. Two weeks ago it was just fine, but she didn't want to move, so the technician started poking at her trying to make her move. Then this past Wednesday is when they hooked her up for 2 hours and I found out later they were shocking the baby during all of this. My daughter kept saying she can see something is wrong with Payton's heart, but nobody will tell her anything. I know for a fact that this hospital cannot handle newborns with problems. The only 2 words she remembers hearing is premature arrhythmia, but nobody will explain anything to her. The first words after the test were "So, how do you feel about an emergency C-section?" She had to have one with her first baby, but nobody bothered to check the records. They finally looked and decided that oh, they would have had to schedule one anyway. Her last words to be were, "If something's going to happen, it better be now because I don't want her to be born and then have to lose her."
Obviously, Payton has a serious heart condition that we are just learning about. She is due in July. We are hoping to get my daughter to talk to TriCare about getting her to a civilian doctor and hospital who might possibly be able to help them. We know that this hospital does not handle newborns with problems, they are airlifted to Wilford Hall at the AFB in San Antonio, and they are excellent, but my daughter won't be able to go after a C-section. DH and I will be going down for Payton's birth and will probably end up bringin Shyanne, the 2-year-old, back with us. My oldest daughter is there, but there's nothing they can do because these military hospitals are so stupid. This hospital is still showing my daughter as my dependent and I've been out for 15 years.
Please, please, please....any prayers for this precious little darling would be so appreciated. We are so worried and scared. Just remember Payton and her mommy and daddy when you say your prayers.
Thanks so much.

She needs to insist on seeing a perinatologist, some one who specializes in babies before they are born. I am a labor and delivery RN, and I have never heard of shocking a baby, but sometime they will make a loud noise against mom's tummy to get fetal heart accelerations. It is also important she finds out what kind of premature arrhythmia it is. She can also call the 800 Tricare number, they have been very helpful in the past when I had needed a civilian refferal.. That she is already getting nonstress tests ans extensive sonograms is actually a blessing, that means they are aware of the problem and closely watching her. I'll keep you all in my thoughts, Carol

I agree with others that she must ask to see a civilian doctor. My husband is retired from the Navy after 23 yrs. We have Tricare Prime and I have found by calling the 800# that Linda suggested that you can get most questions answered. They try to work FOR you. My prayers are being sent for your daughter and Baby Payton. And also for you and DH as you travel to be with your daughter and please take care of yourself. You need to be well rested if your bringing back a little one with you!!!!

Kay, I am praying for your daughter and Payton. I am on Tri-care and luckily not by a military base, so I go to regular doctors. My daughter's Husband is Army at Ft. Jackson, SC. She has medical problems and gets nowhere with the military doctors. She recently got a form that she is now supposed to fill out and go off-base for doctors. Maybe you can look into that for your daughter. Hugs and prayers.

I spoke with my daughter, Nicole, last night. She will call Tri-Care today, but she is not at all hopeful. She said that as long as the OB clinic at Darnell Army Hospital has space, she has to go there. I told her to tell them what's going on (knows there's a problem, no communication, etc.) and see if there is something they can either suggest or do. If she could come here she could use Tri=Care and go elsewhere, but with them together, she can't do that.
I thank you ladies for you support. I did not mention that my daughter's name is Nicole and her DH, my SIL, is named Luke. They are so sweet. He was gone for a year to Iraq and she got pregnant shortly after her returned. They really want this little one. Nicole did not plan on getting married for years and wasn't sure about having kids. She just thought she was a great aunt and that would be enough for her. Her older sister, Casey, is pretty torn up about it as she has 3 kids and never had a problem, but that her baby sister waited and really wants her kids and is having to many problems.
Thank you for your prayers. We shall get through this.

UPDATED:
Nicole went in a couple of days ago for her weekly sonogram. Once again they were "shocking" the baby because when Payton doesn't move, her heart rate drops. Nicole had originally thought she was going in every week because of her blood pressure but found out it's because of Payton. They did find out, though, that Payton will go to Austin if need be and that is a whole lot closer than San Antonio. And it will be a civilian hospital who takes care of her.
Nicole tried to find out what is going on but was told they really don't know since they can't see and examine the baby but that something isn't right.
I almost quit knitting this little one's blanket until we knew something for sure, but now I'm going ahead with it because no matter what, it's Payton's. Shyanne and Nicole came up for a few days last week and Shy just loves "baby sister's" blanket. She said Payton will love it and want to be wrapped up in it.
Nicole did try to get Tri-Care to send her elsewhere, but no dice. They told her she has to go to Darnell at Fort Hood.
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. We are all still hanging in there and hoping.
If I knew how to do an update, I would, but I don't, so I just keep adding.
Thanks.
KayB

Prayers are on the way. Did Nicole find out anything helpful from Tri-care? I don't think they would try to force her to go to a hospital that can't deal with the risk and potential problems, at least I hope not!

Well, Miss Payton Kay Hoskins put in her appearance yesterday, April 14, at 6:22 am. Mom and daughter are just fine! We are so thrilled!! Hubby and I jumped in the car after receiving the news and drove straight to Fort Hood and got to meet her at 5:00 yesterday evening. She is 6 pounds and 18 inches long. Lots of light brown hair and so pretty! It was rather a shock to everyone as Mom almost didn't make it. They called an ambulance and she came right after getting to the hospital. No C-section after all.
I am beginning to wonder about these military doctos. With their first daughter, Shyanne, they were told that she had horribly clubbed feet and would be deformed and retarded - far from it! She is a regular firecracker and a typical 2-year-old. Then we were put through all of this over Payton. I am so ticked about all of this worrying and scaring all of us.
Thank you all so much for your prayers, caring, and kind words. We will be taking pictures and attempting to post them, although I am not much of a computer person, but I will certainly try. I feel so blessed to have all of you in our corner. These 2 little girls are going to know about all of the caring and love shared here.
