Did anyone notice one of the simple solutions in the new mj magazine (page12) about the fly predators that one can buy and release to control the pest. I was wondering if anyone on here has tried it. It sounds great to me. I had never heard of it before.

I've heard of the fly predators before on the RFD channel. Several of the farmers around here use them and said it works for them. Keep us posted if you do decided to buy them and use them. Marly

The zoo uses these at the compost area. We still get flies, but nothing like it would be w/o using the predators.
I think Gardens Alive! sells these |

It looks really tempting to give it a try. I have a lot of area to cover, so I need to see how expensive it will be.

I would love to try this solution. I live next to a cow feild with about 100 head of cattle. The smell and the flies can get so bad in the summer we can't go outside. If I could get ride of the flies I could find a way to deal the smell some!
It's all good!

Will they work on those nasty horrible cow flies? I have to spray my cows because I can't stand to see cows covered in those flies. And how do I know they will stay around?

This will be our third year of using fly predators and they really work well for us!! We usually have 2 to 3 horses, 2 to 4 goats, the donkey, the chickens and the dogs. Flies are NOT a problem around our barn.
Michelle, don't think they would help you much if you live next to a cow field though, THEY would have to use them too! The literature says, I think, that you and the neighbors within 1/4 mile should use them to help control all the flies in the area.
Kris, they do stick around. We have been really pleased with using them. You could email Spalding Labs (that is who we get ours from) and ask them about the big flies.

You have to sprinkle them over the area where the manure is for them to work, Michelle, so you would have to sneak into the cow pasture to distribute them! LOL I would totally do it, but that just me! LOL
I worked on a horse ranch that used them and you could tell a big difference between the year when we got our order in a bit later than normal and when we got them out during the first 60 degree weather of the year. We normally didn't even need to use fly spray on the horses!
