I don't know how many of you are familiar with the Houston Livestock Show. It is one of the biggest livestock shows in the country and all the proceeds received during the show are given to local kids for scholarships to college if they are studying agriculture or animal science etc. They give out millions of dollars in scholarships every year. Well, we went tonight and they announced the Grand Champion Goats. The Grand Champion Ram went for $195,000. and it was raised by - Guess What - A Girl. The Reserve Grand Champion Ram went for $134,000. and - you guessed it - raised by a Girl. The Grand Champion female goat (don't remember what they are called) went for $132,000. and YUP you guessed it raised by a Girl. Then they brought in the bulls and picked the winners tonight. They will be sold tomorrow but the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion bulls were both raised by ----- Drum Roll Please ------GIRLS!!!! I was so blown away. I was so proud of those girls and I don't even know them. Just though you guys might appreciate it as much as I did. I have to say though that if Barbie had a bull she would have both of them. They were absolutely beautiful. And I never knew goats could be so pretty, pretty. LOL

Our Houston show is quite incredible. At the local county level, our smaller shows are having the same trend.....girls participating more and winning more. While I'm glad to see girls really succeeding in ag related activities, it also sadens me to see the decline in young men participating.
Most of our 4H groups have more girls than guys. In the showring there are more girls. I'm amazed to see girls out there showing steers and driving barrows/pigs and even submitting woodwork projects. It's cool. Our sales don't fetch the dollars like HLS. But, our kids still get between 5 - 10 thousand....not bad at all!
Ya know...guys should wisen up and see that they could meet a lot of girls in ag! Although, girls would still out perform!!
One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt." |
