I have always liked the poem "The Invitation" by Oriah Mountain Dreamer so when I was at a thrift store and found a book about the poem, I picked it up. I've been working my way through the book (liking some parts and not liking others) and I came across this quote.
- Years ago, a student told me "I am afraid that if I stop, if I slow down and rest, I'll never amount to anything." I smiled. "What if I told you that everything you are ever going to amount to, you are right now?" -
That quote really hit me, and made me feel at peace. I'm always struggling with trying to do more, thinking that if I don't do more, I won't become who I am.(Always confusing tasks with accomplishment and work with worth, I know.)Then I was thinking that maybe other people would read that and feel stress and anxiety about that, thinking "Oh no! This is all I am???"
So I was wondering what you all took that quote to mean, or how it would make you feel. (Also, if anyone has read the Invitation book or knows of the poem, let me know what you thought!)

Amy: I take the meaning to be, from the quote, that "right now" you are everything you are ever going to amount to, UNTIL tomorrow things will change. To me, any thing you learn, or do, or have an insight on, or have a thought about, changes what you are going to be. I hope you understand how I see it. LOL. I've never read the poem, but I sure will check it out now. Thanks for sharing that with us. Marly

To me it means that all the potential for all kinds of things is already inside me - what I do with it is up to me
