I'm getting into this sewing thing! I've made a few skirts, a really cute handbag, and I'm finally fixing up those shirts I had that I didn't really like the cut of. :)
Now that I'm ending up with "scraps" of fabric, I'm wondering what you all do with your scraps? I used to take scraps in to make crazy quilts, but I'm looking for something different. What are your favorite "little" projects that help you use up scraps and odds and ends?

I either make patch work quilts or pin cushions or I use them for applique. It all depends on how big or small they are.

I guess I'm not the first to post this- but I use mine for applique, potholders, and little projects like those Oragami kleenex holders for pocket tissues. I also use them for making handles on tote bags. I'm going to use some to make little pads for carrying heavy buckets- a pattern I found in a book. I thought they were silly but now I like the idea of padding bucket handles! I keep my scraps in large ziplock bags. ~ Mary LD

Thanks for all the ideas! Can anyone explain a little more about applique to me? o you just cut the shapes and stitch them on? Do you only use it for tea towels? I love all the ideas, ladies. Thanks!!!

Amy, If I could I would applique everything! It's so easy and fun and creative. You could get some books from the library on applique and fabric scrapping. Applique is easiest with cotton fabrics and Heat and Bond (or a similar product for support). The instructions are right on the product. Basically, I iron one side of Heat and Bond to the WRONG side of the fabric, then trace a shape, cut it out and iron it on to the main project (tea cozy, bag, jacket, etc.). The tricky part is thinking ahead to the way I want the shape to face. Then I either hand stitch or machine stitch around the edge with a decorative stitch (usually in a contrasting color thread; blanket stitch is my favorite). I bet YouTube has a tutorial. Hope that helps. Dianne

Amy, I often use cookie cutters to trace shapes for my appliques. I have a LOT of cool shapes in my cookie cutter colection. You can applique on anything- skirts, bibs, blankets, kids' t- shirts, whatever. Sometimes quilt shops or sewing studios have applique classes. By the way, hi Dianne! I know first hand that Dianne makes an awesome pincushion from time to time too- we were swap partners! ~ Mary LD

Depending on how big they are, I tear them into thin enough strips to put into a rag rug project or I cut them into 2" squares for a quilt square :D hugs Jessie

I have been cutting them into 2 1/2 by 5 inch strips to use for a strip quilt someday. Amy Grace

I cut them into 4x4 squares, fold them into triangles, sew them onto a backing (canvas, denim, upholstery fabric, any large heavy scrap)and voila, a blooming beautiful throw rug. Or I cut them into strips and sew them into lasagna quilts. The littlest ones go in a bag that my kindergarten students use in the art area. (Teachers LOVE scraps and odds and ends!)

Mrs Amy, I'm new to quilting/piecing. So you fold the 4X4 sqaures into triangles, then sew all the triangles together. Is that to make the rug thicker/ more dense? I really want to try this- Mary LD

Mary LD--Thank you for the pincushion compliment. I showed yours off to my Stitching Club at work and they were wowed! Amy--I'm interested in the rug idea too. Dianne

Diane, That pincushion is SOOOOO easy. It's really almost like cheating to get such a great result with such ease. I can send you the directions next week if you want. My friend sent me the wool bead for the top. I have a few more left in other colors- red and pink, I think, if you would want some. What would happen if I backed a rug in the double knit polyester my friend gave me? Skiddy? I love to make rugs but it can take SO LONG! ~ Mary LD

I use my scraps to make backing for quilt tops. You end up with an awesome backing. It is like having two quilts in one. I love to make bags out of them. Each bag is unique. Have you thought of sewing your scraps into a large enough piece and cutting out a vest, or jacket. Think how awesome that would look with a white shirt, pair of jeans and boots. Just a thought.

Diane, I will try to mail on Wednesday. I'll send 3-5 wool beads, as long as I have that many. I hope that will be good! Love, Mary
