I have a brother sewing machine and no matter what setting I put the tension, it is always wrong. The stitches are sloppy, the first few stitches get a wad of thread on the back side and if I use any stitches other than the running stitch, the machine breaks down (bobbin pops, thread comes out, etc.).

I'm thinking something internal is messed up. Before I take it in to a shop for fixing, anyone have ideas on what could be the cause?

Kimberly, hi! If the bottom thread is loopy then the upper tension is incorrect and or it is threaded improperly. Also check and make sure your needle isn't bent or perhaps just too used? I would suggest starting over with a new needle and rewinding the bobbin and checking for lint in the shuttle. Sometimes it is just something small but creates hugh problems with the stitches. Next try moving the tension dial a little each way and see if it makes any difference. if none of that helps perhaps the little screw on the bobbin case needs turned..only a quarter turn at a time though. Gosh, if that doesn't help it looks like a stop at the repair shop.

Make sure your needle is inserted correct with the flat facing the correct way. I also hold my thread when I begin to sew and that seems to help. Also check to see that the little slit that is on the tread spool is not catching the thread and messing things up.
I hate it when my machines won't work. Make sure it is oiled too. Things get sticky and don't move as good as they should.

I wondered about that, Suzan. I've had issues with the machine since I bought it. Things always seem gummed up, with all the "fancy" stitches looking terrible.

Geez, Kimberly I also thought of something else...each time you adjust your tension it is probably a good idea to turn it off and on again so it can reset. Also, most machines want you to have the pressure foot down when you do adjust. Can you tell I have had a brother sewing machine before...? lol I really bonded with her and got to know her really well...haha. After all that bonding my husband bought me an embroidery machine and I gave the brother to my daughter! Well, good luck!

Oh boy do I hate an ornrey sewing machine! I bought a Janome DC 2010 for myself for Christmas (after fighting with an old Singer Merriott for years) and boy do I adore it- worth every penny!

I had that lumping in the back problem the other day for the first time and just about had an old, familiar panic attack until I realized that I'd dropped the bobbin in the wrong way..... :P Next I have to get Janome's new serger, I'm borrowing my momma's and boy can that puppy go!
