I want to order chicks to raise for butchering. Can anyone recommend a butchering chicken that has not been genetically mutated? A few years back my mom raised butcher chickens that got so huge, so fast they couldn't walk. It was digusting going in the shed and seeing the chickens trying to move around. I just want a nice, normal chicken that has meat on its bones. Any ideas?

I always buy and raise jumbo cornish crosses, I butcher at 6-8 weeks. I raise them on Turkey start, then Turkey grow.

I've been looking into this as well. Dark Cornish is what I'm hearing. They can reproduce naturally, so if you keep a roo and some girls around you should be able to have a continuous supply of freezer birds.
Alas, hubby didn't like that idea for this year, as we have no permanent coop yet, and I'd want them seperated from the laying hens . So I just ordered the cornish crosses. 20 of em. I'm soo excited!

| am ordering my day old chicks due to come in march , any ides on getting started , we have layers , this will be our first time with freezer birds,, am worried about proper heat as we are in canada and it can still be very cold at night.. |
