I bought a Jersey yesterday! I'm already milking 2 cows (a Jersey and a Holstien/Dutch Belted cross) but I wanted another Jersey. Here she is...2 years old, registered, bred to a Jersey, due to calve in Sept, gentle and sweet as can be! She's giving about 3 gallons a day right now...not sure how long she's been fresh.

Her name is Tilly, short for Chantilly, which is French for Whipped Cream!

Wow, she is a beautiful girl. Great udder, too. That's a lot of milk. Are you hand milking or machine? With 3 cows you must have a machine. My hands would be killing me after 3. You did good. Is she getting along with the others?

And look at the pretty blue sky. Nice day there, too.

Today was a great day here! She's doing ok with the others so far...they're just pushing her around a bit, but they always do that! I hand milk...all 3! I've gotten pretty fast at it, but I'm having to go slow with this girl...she has smaller...handles that I'm used!!! LOL

I make some cheese and we have friends who like the milk...about 4 families now, I think. We also have pigs, so I can skim the extra and keep all the cream, and give the milk to the pigs!

We have ice cream every day in the summertime! I do 3 cups of cream, 5 cups of milk, and 2 cups of sugar. Plus vanilla or cocoa powder or crushed strawberries... It's good, and we like it! We just have a regular ice cream freezer that we use...

What a beauty! You must be thrilled! And she's so photogenic. If you took a picture of any of my critters you'd think they had been mud wrestling.

Kayla, I have a small ice cream maker that goes in the freezer after it's churned about 20 minutes. Got it at Target. Anyway, I made ice cream using 2 cups of sraight cream from my friend's Jersey. It was like eating bits of butter. Should I have just used 1 cup of cream and the other milk? I could not eat it.

Thanks...I AM thrilled!

We've experimented over the years, and that ratio of cream and milk seems to work best. Otherwise, like you said, it's like eating butter! That's pretty much the same kind of freezer that we use. We find that if we use any more cream (than the 3 and 5 cups) it's too buttery!

OOOOO!! You lucky girl!!! I want a Jersey cow SO BAD!!! I DO have a Jersey bull calf that I bottle raised, and my husband has a few Dairy cross cows (though mostly Herefords and one Charlois (SP?) They were all bred by a Angus/Brahma X bull for June babies. Not very good dairy genes there I'm afraid. Someday I'll get my Jersey girl, I just KNOW it! And I already have a handsome young man just WAITING for her!!!

Have fun with your new addition Kayla. Keep us posted on the the new baby when it arrives. I'll be praying it's a GIRL!~~~ Tracy
