My son came home yesterday with some disturbing news. Apparently, students in the High School were informed via intercom from the Principal stating that due to graffiti discovered in the boys bathrooms all stall doors will be removed this weekend....
How this is related to the graffiti I have no clue, but isn't this a violation of students rights? Especially the boys----my goodness how embarrassing is that? Not being able to close the door to a stall and do your business?
I told my son to let me know if the principal "follows" through with his graffiti deterent solution.
Any thoughts on this?

Now I have heard it all!! This is outrageous. I would like to see the principal and the rest of the faculty use these restrooms.

Well, there are still the walls to write on. So what good does it do just to take the doors off. Why not just have a big open room? Why do people have to write on walls anyway? Even if there were no doors and someone wrote on the walls, no one would tell on that person. So then they'd have to have cameras in the bathrooms to see what they are doing in there. It's just ridiculous. The whole thing. Sorry. I guess I am just a little down on kids right now. Some people just don't get it.

When we were in the UK the school bathrooms didn't even have walls. Just free standing toilets and sinks. The ladies dressing rooms in the large department stores were just benches with hooks on the walls. No walls at all. We as Americans are spoiled in that way. I think with the political environment we are living in we are going to see that we keep loosing what we always took for granted as far as civil rights.

I thought that the boys rooms had mostly urinals anway. With a couple of doored stalls, Shows what I know!Actually I just asked my grandson and he said thats the way it is in his school. Urinals and stalls with doors. He didn't think that was a very good idea taking the stall doors off. To be frank he said what if you have to poop!

I think that if someone pushed back when they were pushed we wouldn't loose anymore ground. I am very active in this arena and I would be blowing a gasket. I homeschool and stuff like that is one of the reasons. I would start by finding out who your school board representative is and when the next meeting is. Often you must be put on the agenda before a school board meeting. You can find out what the rules are in you district by contacting the school board. the next step is complaining to the state separtment of education. Starting a petition of other unhappy parents with children at the school will go the farthest.Thank God I live in America were we still have a voice, even though some politicans would like to make us think we don't!!!

I agree with Michelle....I am steaming! And according to my girl who is a Junior a lot of the teachers are scratching their heads at the principals proposed vandalism/graffiti solution.
They are supposed to remove the stall doors this weekend. Oh.... and it's against the law to have cameras located inside a bathroom---Big No, No.
I just don't see how doing this is going to have any effect on the kid or kids who are vandalizing the boys bathroom in the high school.
I am going to wait and see if in fact over the weekend the doors are removed and if they are, I am going to the high school personally on Monday and speak to the principal and then I am going to contact the State Department of Education.
I just really feel for the kids who had nothing to do with this and they are the ones who are being punished without due cause.
What about someones boy who is sick with diarrhea---how humiliating will that be? Makes me wonder about the principal's idea of solving the initial problem of vandalism...what can he be thinking?

Not only is this possibly a violation of civil rights, but it's a violation of one's personal boundaries. There are reasons why we have boundaries, ie, it's necessary for our mental/emotional health. This principal sounds like a wacko and should be removed. I would start a petition to get rid of this guy. cindy

As if high school wasn't stressful enough...
prairiehawk,
I agree about our children's mental and emotional health and we all have boundaries--we have been forced to have them at an early age. But this is just way out in left field as far as I am concerned. I mean... I couldn't sit down in a bathroom with kids coming and going in and out. GEEZ.
I did contact our local ACLU and am waiting for a reply about the situation.

On a lighter note, not having doors in the bathrooms in high school may have prepared me for being a mother! I have not peed by myself since around 1989! My dogs are just as bad. If I shut the door I hear them whine and can see their little paws under the door!!!

I work at a junior high, we still have doors on the boy's RR stalls, but the reason for removing the doors is - the artist can be seen writing on the wall if there is no door and someone can identify the artist to the principal, thereby getting the artist in trouble. I don't agree with the door removal, it is not a civil right but a personal one. Cameras are not allowed in the RR because that falls somewhere under child porn, or so I have been told. I would say go to school board meetings, get a petition, and be vocal. polite but loud if necessary.

Do you really believe that if a kid is sitting on an open toilet and sees another kid spray painting the bathroom walls he is going to get up, flush, (hopefully wash his hands!) and then go and tell the principal about it? I don't think he will.
There is a terrible word in our language called Retaliation. It's a fact that retaliation is used in our school system right up there with kids who are bullies... very sad to say, but those are the facts. And I don't think that by removing a door in an area where privacy should be utmost that this will deter someone who is bent on destroying someone else's property. There has to be another way to accomplish this without sacrificing our children's right to personal privacy.
What would you do as principal of a High School faced with ever increasing episodes of graffiti?

Have you tried contacting your school Superintendent. I found if very useful just to go straight to the top. I use to know our Mrs. Mossman very well when my kids were is school. I once had a male gym coach put my 6th grad daughter in a dressing room with three 8th grade boys alone to fold towels. She had not taken her red folder to class the day before and that was her punishment. After I visited Mrs. Mossman the man was no longer a coach. Just go to the top, point out how the situation is detrimental to the kids. If there are other Mom's unhappy ask them to call the superintendent as well. It takes a lot less time than collecting signatures or waiting for meetings to come around. Sometimes you have to go through several other people but just keep insisting you talk to the superintendent personally and immediately. In Texas they have to see you if you request a meeting.

Well... the VP e-mailed me after I contacted him this afternoon as to whether in fact this announcement was a rumor and if they planned on following through with removing the bathroom stall doors and this was his response:
************************************************************* Good Afternoon! Yes that announcement was made by --------- after conferring with the Sherriff’s department. In past cases involving the type and quantity of graffiti that we were hit with, the Sherriff’s Deputy explained that that was the only effective way to handle it. Since the announcement, we have had no graffiti. It will be my recommendation at the next Adcouncil meeting to not remove doors if it stays under control.
**************************************************************
I emailed him back and said that if the doors were in fact removed then I would be contacting our local ACLU to file a complaint for invasion of privacy.
So there you have it. I also plan on attending that Adcouncil meeting coming up.
