I often have to take a meal to people who have had surgery or are sick (or even for a funeral). I need some new ideas! What are some dishes you prepare for occasions like that?

I sortof have a "go to" dish that I use for all those occasions, with a loaf of french bread.

It's from Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant (cookbook) and it's called Fall River Vegetable stew. It's really comforting, and smells so heavenly that even the most despondent might eat a bite or two.

Oh my....home cooked chicken soup definately! It's full of good things to speed up recovery and it's not heavy. That would be my number #1 choice for someone who is sick or had surgery.

I have found that homemade vegetable beef soup always goes over well especially for several people.

I usually make some type of Italian dish. Most commonly I make Lasagne and/or stuffed Manicotti. Things that reheat well or can be frozen and defrosted easily. I usually make a ceasar salad, loaf of bread and chocolate cake with chocolate icing to go with it.

Other things I've found that worked well in the past also are chicken and dressing (all cooked together in a pan) and chicken pot pie.

If someone has been ill or had surgery, I like to make chicken and noodles. For a funeral, hash brown potatoe casserole goes real well.
