My mom has grown them in the black plastic round bins(the kind with holes in them. She just layers the spuds with grass and hay.Last year I dug down as far as I could go and put the spud in and just kept putting more hay on. As the potato grew up through the hay,I kept layering away.Boy did I have alot of spuds and it was sooo easy to pull off the hay and get those puppies.Lots easier than digging through dirt! |

Around here, old timers save tires and stack them for the same thing. I've never done it, but I've seen tires stacked up in people's gardens for this purpose. I hear the yields are great. And if you already have the tires.... |

I have seen the black pastic bins that Dorothy is talking about in garden magazines. I have been tempted to try it, looks pretty easy and would be better then digging through the dirt for the spuds.

Hello, I have offened wondered if I could use large plastic barrels with hole cut into it similar to a strawberry clay pot. We have these huge blue plastic barrels that I could cut holes in to, plant and then tip over to harvest. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this or am I out of my brain?
Pray for our troops to come home safe and soon. Enjoying the road to the simple life :>) |

I was mad at myself for letting a bag of potatoes "go" today. Now I don't feel bad.. I am going to do this tomorrow! Thank you for sharing a great idea!
