Our Buff Orpington, Bridget, is acting like she's broody. She hasn't been laying for about a week, but she won't come out of her nest box - I think she is broody, DH thinks she is about to die (he tends to overreact a little)- anyone have some wisdom to share? From what I have read Buffs are more likely to be broody, and her not laying is a sign of that too. It is our first full year with the ladies so we don't have a ton of experience to fall back on.

Sounds like it to me! Is she sitting on eggs or just in the nest? If you can give her some fertile eggs in the next day or so she will likely hatch them out. If you don't have any you want to keep removing any eggs that other chickens put under her and keep removing her from the nest and this will hopefully cause her to break her broody cycle. When mine went broody I just made sure they had food and water close by. But it will seem like they never get out to eat.

Right now she is just sitting on the nest (we had to get rid of our roosters so no fertile eggs) and it does seem like she has been there forever!! I will start moving her out of the nest tomorrow - John tried to scoot her out but that didn't work, not surprising, hens are pretty strong minded.

She might be making little cute clucking sounds too if she is broody
They do tend to set tight and will often times keep returning to the nest
eventually she'll snap out of it
I have a silkie who goes broody any time there are more than 2 eggs in a nest box. I have to be really vigilant about removing them if I want her to continue to produce eggs too
She went broody about a month ago, so I indulged her so I could have some early spring chicks |

Yea and if you look into their eyes they kind of have a spaced out look to them
Guess you would have to zone out in order to set still for 21 days or more! |

I have noticed one of my Buff hens is missing, #13. I always count every morning and have only counted 12 the past few days. So she is either setting on eggs somewhere, too, or dead. I'll have to go on a hen hunt now. You just got me thinking. I hope she's setting. But I don't want baby chicks right now. I always end up with mostly roosters.
I hope you can find some fertile eggs for her.
