If you need to start seedlings early, cut a TP roll in half and fill with dirt. You can tie four or so together with twine to help them stay up right. You save those plastic containers and reuse those rolls that gather.
Maybe some of you have seen this or its been mentioned before but as we start getting excited about planning this years garden you might want to start saving those TP rolls.

My family thinks I'm crazy, but they just roll their eyes and keep collecting TP rolls for me! I'm looking to make a cold frame this year to extend my season out. Anyone have any ideas? Also interested in a inexpensive greenhouse. One that could be moved easily if needed. Ideas?

I have a ways to go before I plant seeds but that is a great idea so I will have to try it with my grandson. It's an activity I'm sure he will enjoy, he's real good at making messes.

Can you plant the TP rolls in the ground after starting a seed in them? (Sorry if this is a dumb question! LOL)

I'll bet you CAN plant the TP rolls right in the ground. I start my seeds in egg cartons, and just "plant" the little section with the seedling in it right in the ground (they're the cardboard cartons, not the foam/plastic ones) and it works great. I love the TP roll idea, too! I'll bet the size is better than egg carton spaces - they're pretty small for some of the larger seeds...

I'm so ready to start all mine next week. I don't have near enough TP rolls for this year, but will start collecting for next and get my mom to save hers too.

This IS a great idea! I was going to use them in my classroom ~ not allowed to for sanitary reasons. So I've been putting them in recycling. Now I know they will actually get used!

I used them this year for the 1st time. I tied 4 rolls together and had my 3 yr.old grandson fill them with dirt and plant pea seeds in them. When he comes over he checks out his pea plants before he plays car's. He was so excited when 2 of them grew. We can't wait to plant & eat them.
I use the empty rolls usually to hold the lint I pull out of my dryer and when I fill one I use it to start fires in the outside fireplace. It works well that way also.

Libbie, I wonder if you could leave the lid on to close over the little seedlings if it gets too cold at night? Kind of like a mini cold frame? |

And I thought this was my invention! Saved rolls for a year (you would be amazed how many a home with three women and one man can go through - my poor hubby) then tore up paper egg cartons over winter and stuffed them in the rolls for bottoms. My only problem was that the outside of tp rolls became thickly covered with a dark mold so put them out in garage (plants still have a small window and are growing). I'm wondering if there wasn't enough air flow. I had put the 6 tubes into a plastic cookie tray and covered with a plastic produce bag to get the seeds started. Anyone else have this happen? I usually start seeds in yogurt cups under shop lights in the basement, but didn't have enough cups to start everything I dreamed of -- that's when the tp roll frenzy started.

Well holy cow! Daddy would have LOVED this idea! I bought a couple packs of seed starters and several of them just did not work... Either I could not get enough dirt in them or they held too much or too little water. Using TP rolls, I wouldn't waste the money on the paper starters! And, unless it's scented toilet paper (made that mistake ONCE) I don't see why it couldn't be planted and help nourish the soil afterwards!

Another way I have used them is to keep electrical cords corraled. I have one covered with contact paper for my iron that is probably 10 years old.
