How do you show you are a farmgirl in your day to day real life? I don't have the farm with animals so for right now farmgirl really IS a condition of that heart- but I take that with me wherever I go.
I think that farmgirls are in many ways loving and caring- nurturers. When I am at work I try to put myself in my customer's shoes.
Farmgirls also need to get things done so I roll up my sleeves and get to the point and get the problem solved.
At home I struggle to get things done. It is easy to be in my comfort zone and just let things be- but I WANT the beautifully organized house that I have always dreamed about.
Anyway so I was wondering what you ladies do to take the farmgirl spirit with you throughout the day?

I constantly remind people that there are still good folks out there. When I listen to the news or read the paper I am in search of at least one good samaritan story that I can share with my clients thru out the day. I own a salon and have lots of opportunities to remind people that deep within us all usually is a desire for the simply joys of life that have always been. |

I always look for the good in everybody. Everybody has at least (1)good attribute, right? haha I try to remind myself that I don't know what's going on in their world, I can't walk in their shoes. That's how I was raised. Sometimes(many times)that's gotten me the name"goody-two-shoes", but I don't care anymore. I'm too old to care. I just try to be "Nice!"

I think being a farmgirl is a matter of the heart. Even if someone doesn't live in the country with animals there are other things that can be done like canning, sewing, and going to farmer's markets. Plus I wear aprons and hats and read encouraging things.

Hi, Alee!
I, like you, give my all throughout the day, but sometimes struggle to get it all done at home. Sssooooo... I organize one spot at a time: today I cleaned off the dining room table, added a clean, fresh red tablecloth and added a red vase with hearts hanging from white branches. My dog's toys may still be all over the living room floor, and my laundry pile may be overflowing, but this little spot of 'lovely' makes me smile.

Hi Alee!
One thing that comes to mind is how we farmgirls tend to mix a little something fresh and pretty into everything practical and useful. For instance, going into town unexpectedly for a broken part or tool may find me in my rubber mud boots, work jeans and a worn work shirt. But I still have on my best make-up (including lip gloss )and will take a few seconds to tie a colorful, clean scarf around my neck or a ribbon in my hair braid. I can pluck a fresh flower or herb spring to poke in my pocket or rolled-up sleeve. And lastly, it is most natural to offer a kind smile or a simple compliment to anyone I run into town before heading back home to my chores. The older farm women I know have a quality about them that lets everyone know they really do place a high priority on beauty - in their appearance, their homes & most of all the beauty of their spirit & attitude. That beauty is lasting and is what is seen and heard - but most importantly is felt by others - even when the dishes are stacked high in the sink or the laundry is piled high in the mud room.
My Mother taught me this, as I was growing up on our family farm.

I believe kindness goes a long way as well. It is a matter of the heart. Treating others as you would like to be treated. I have never understood why people can be so unkind.

I have a ring that has an inscription on it that says "Let Your Life Speak." I try to remember that saying in everything I do. I agree with Tammy, I don't understand why people are so unkind either! It is SOOOO much easier to be pleasant!

I too try to be kind with a smile and helping hand whenever and wherever possible.
Some days it's easier than others, that's for sure.

I was thinking about the Amish. Those women are farmgirls! I read a novel about an "English" woman who stayed with an Amish friend. I would love to see that type of farmgirlness lived out.

Alee - I, too, am with Donna, things are so overwhelming here as my husband is a I guess you can say a hoarder and I am not, he saves way to much as it may be useful in the future but anyway, I do try to "freshen" little areas at a time and that makes me feel better! |

Treating others as you wish to be treated is what I do and also try very hard to teach my children. I have also learned from my father that respect is earned not automatic. He was right. I have also taught my children this as well and it works for them. As for lack of kindness in others my only explanation is they are unhappy with their own lives and have no idea how to fix this or don't want to because it is easier to blame the world than to take responsibility for their own actions.
Give thanks to yourself everyday for all the wonderful things you do! |

I try to have a smile ready and possibly a compliment or a cheerful greeting to everyone I meet. And, once they have passed, I usually pray that they receive one special blessing in their life that day -- something they really need or something that will really make their heart sing with joy.
