for Valentines Day for my two boys who are almost 6 and 7. I know that we can make v-day cards and deliver them to nursing homes or veterans or the like...any other ideas? We tend to aim for the out-of-the-ordinary or off-the-beaten-path type of things...but I'm fresh out of ideas. Can I borrow some of yours?

Well, they could do a dog and cat food drive for the local animal shelter. Or you can foster a rescue animal from some local rescue. There are rescues for everything from horses to hedgehogs, even reptiles. There is probably something in your local area. Some local shelters will let little ones come in and much stalls or walk dogs. That is what my girls always did for service projects. My daughter runs a rescue and she does fostering for service projects.

You could have them do a "heart attack" on neighbors or friends. You make dozens of simply decorated hearts, put them on little sticks and then the night before valentines day, sneak in and put them all over the front yard. Leave a big heart cookie on the front porch with the note saying " you've been heart-attacked... hope this brings a smile to your face because somebody ~loves~ you!!
You could get a couple of those simple weaving looms, certainly easy enough for that age, and work on some red hats for a shelter, the hospitals or local kindergartens.
Valentines for the local police and fire departments.
At the fire station, we always get lots of little stuffed animals from the community to give away, but our favorite thing to give away to little kids (and some big kids) on an aid call or other stressful time are the small fleece blankets. There's a gal who makes them for our annual Christmas project and we get to put the extras on the aid car. Love those. SO do our patients.
Do what you love, love what you do. |
