Has anyone financed a business using a smaller business for start-up finds? I'm working on self-financing a small storefront/ semi-community center for yoga/dharma classes with a small retail component (buddhist books and meditation supplies) but I was hoping to start creating funds with reusable plastic-free home products - like cloth sandwich bags, cute bowl covers (instead of plastic wrap or plastic storage containers), cloth menstrual pads, etc.

The good news is there are several dharma students who are interested in buying a commercially zoned house (as an investment) in our "funky" college area and help with buildout and the first year's mortgage. After that, I would hope the business would be solvent and mostly debt-free. But I don't have any capital myself (not much savings I can use) but since we have no debt, my husband and I agree it would be worth using consumer credit where needed the first year. I want to lessen that choice as much as possible.

Does anyone else help one business with another business? I can work from now til the end of the summer for sure making and selling these household products as a home business to build some capital. I'd appreciate any feedback.

It sure sounds like it would work - I've only used funds from other jobs to work toward a business start-up, but I know there are many ways to do things. I wonder if the Small Business Development Center in Arizona would have some info. for you? They have them in Utah, and I think they'd have them in AZ, too, but I'm not positive.

XOXO, Libbie
