I had a (probably) goofy idea this morning when I woke up. I thought it would be nice to be able to sleep on my second story deck this summer, surrounded by all my herbs with a view of the stars, but I want some privacy around me (the deck can be seen by my neighbors). Has anyone set up a sleeping area on their deck? How'd you do it? I was thinking about just getting or making some type of folding screen that I can pull out and set up when I need it. I don't think the "glamping cot" will be cushy enough on wood so I'm still figuring out the bed part of this idea.

That sounds wonderful, Rene. I don't think I'll be able to put a bed out there but maybe I can figure out some kind of collapsing cushion idea. Hmmmmm....

Last summer I just put an air mattress out in the backyard under the starts and made my bed up all pretty every night before dusk. In the morning I carried the blankets in and set the air mattress in the shed..lol My neighbors think I am a freak: )
Have you thought of a Futon for the deck?

Ooh, a futon might be just the ticket. If I can rig up a way to keep it dry during the summer so I don't have to lug it in and out, that might be perfect. Thanks!

Very interesting idea - our deck is on the first floor and we have a french door off of our bedroom, but it might freak out the possums, racoons, black bear and who knows what else if we were to sleep out there. Could be interesting though. We don't have mosquitos so that wouldn't be a problem. |

Once year ago in a magazine I saw a bed that was a platform that was hanging from the ceiling of a porch. It was just a piece of wood on chains and a full size mattress. It was a covered porch. I have always wanted to do that and with air mattresses or futons it would be even easier if you had the right porch. But I have never had a porch. *tear*. Someday I will have one.

Yup, you got me there too. I have two seperate decks, One if off the master bedroom, so I hung netting & sheers, moved an old bed, reading lamp, table and chest of drawers out there for the summer.
Dear Renee, How do you keep everything dry? We live in Vermont,We get lots of rain. Here a deck does not have a roof. A porch is covered.sounds like you have a nice set up! :) Noreen in VT |
