hi girls
well, i've been sick all week, and wondering when to start on learning to knit. I decided to start today..this is all i've done so far, and i have NO idea what i'm making (maybe a scarf?)- but trying to get use to the feel of the needles.

If you are having trouble try Bamboo needles. I really got better when I started using them.

It will get easier with practice, I promise. It's a little like learning to play the guitar - at first you have to over think every step, but after awhile you develop your own rhythm and it will flow smoothly and you won't even notice that you aren't overthinking the process anymore. Keep at it. And don't forget to breathe!!

thanks girls,
i have gotten no where! i switched to larger bamboo needles, slightly easier, but i find that i have a hard time keeping consistent tension. it will start out ok, then gets sloppy. i can relate to playing the guitar- it was such a pain, and with a lot of practice, it is easy now.

I used wooden needles at first. I got better faster with them. Practice is the best thing. Looks good so far.

Connie - if you can play the guitar you will be able to knit. Knitting is really a lot easier than guitar playing....Your tension will always be ify at first. You might try one of those tension rings that you put on your finger. I have never used one but they are supposed to help. One thing that might help is if the stitches are getting looser as you go, try pulling the yarn a bit after transfering the stitch to the right needle. If too tight, try loosening your grip on your needles a bit and loosening the stitch after it is transfered to the right needle. If your start/cast on row is too tight, try casting on with two needles held together - your working needle and a smaller one and cast on over the two needles. Slide the smaller needle out after casting on and this should leave the stitches looser. Hope that helps.

Sheri is right, just make it a habit to tighten the yarn after you transfer each stitch to the other needle. It will keep it nice and even, and keep stitches from falling off the needles too! Good Luck! I am about to try my hand at purling. So far have not been able to do it correctly, wind up with lumps , but I will press on.

Shari, what kind of lumps are you getting with your purl stitches? When you purl, make sure the yarn is in front, put the needle in the stitch on the left needle from top to bottom ie right to left, throw the yarn over the top, and then slip the stitch off. Hope that helps.

Well, now I am not getting lumps, just extra twists of yarn and holes. Am attempting the easy knitted slippers from the magazine. It's the garter stitch edging that is ruining me! Where I try to switch back to purling, I keep getting this extra twisted stitch on the needle. If I try to fix it, I make holes. What am I doing wrong?

You are bringing the yarn forward over the top of the needle or forgetting to move it to the back when knitting knit stitch. The yarn is in front for a purl stitch. When switching, bring the yarn back (between the two needles) and then make your knit. You are knitting with the yarn in front and this makes the extra loop. (Sometimes that is used to add stitches in knitting lace in lieu of a yarn over (yo)). I hope that helps.
