Does anyone do a Boar's head feast in their community?

Growing up our church would put one on ever winter sometime in December (Usually before Christmas I think). Everyone would dress up in Medival type clothing, one of the trumpet players from the local high school band would be hired to blow fan fare for each family group, and they had these red shift type dresses for some of the young girls in the church to wear and we acted as the servants for the feast. There was usually some fun skits in the theme of the night- some one would play court jester, the kind and queen of the previous year would sit at the "head" table.

We had a ceramic Boars head that had a place of honor in front of a roaring fire in the fire place and one of the members would roast these huge pieces of pork. When the time was right we would plate the meal- usually scalloped potatoes and such were also served, and we would serve all the guests. Then after dinner was eaten we served pieces of cake to everyone. Inside the cake was baked little momentos and if your cake held one it signified good luck etc for the next year. And set of the mementos picked the king and queen for the next year as well.

It as a lot of fun and tickets were sold in the community. I am sure it was a fund raiser but I am not sure what it was for.

Anyone ever been to one of these?

Alee, I have never been to one, but I've heard of others organizing them. Sounds like it would be a LOT of fun!!

The Christ Church Catherdral in downtown Cincinnati does one each year, Alee. I've been several times. Really a lot of fun, and a neat way to end the holiday season. There's is usually the end of the 12th day of Christmas. Don't know if that's the significant date or no, but that's when they usually hold it.

In college, we always had a "Madrigal Dinner" which featured the choir dressed in Rennesance (sic) clothing and they would roast a whole pig. Then they would present the roast pig with an apple in its mouth. then everyone got to join in the feast. Later on, it was a tradition for the pig's head to appear in the most unlikely places on campus. It was a lot of fun (and the food was great).
