I am LOVING my laundry soap....I am not itchy and it does a REAL GOOD job on cleaning....Thanks for the recipe....

Are you using a dry powder type? I'm on a septic system and have always been told to only use liquids/gels for detergents. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Krissy, I have a septic system also and have been making the dry, powdered soap for about a year. Have not had ANY problems with it at all. My DH is allergic to EVERYTHING and he loves this laundry detergent. Says it doesn't make him itch, but gets the clothes really clean.
Edited to say: I think the reason you're not supposed to use the powdered detergent with a septic system is because the detergent doesn't always dissolve very well. After a while it builds up in the septic system, kills the "good" bacteria and starts causing problems. I have not had any problems with the powdered laundry soap dissolving in the wash and we have very, very hard water.

My sister was here visiting over the holiday and she said that she couldn't believe how it(dry type) got an old ring-around-the-collar out of her shirt AND that plus vinegar made her clothes soooo soft. WOW! That really made me feel great! I haven't had the itchies either and I'm really sensitive to fragrances.
(I sound like a commercial) hahaha

Oh, I just love my homemade laundry soap!! Mine is powdered- 1 bar of grated soap(I use Fels Naptha for now, but am going to be using my own soap next!), 1 cup of washing soday, 1 cup of borax.
We are on septic, and I've watched the soap in the washer, it all dissolves very quickly. I have noticed that if I put in extra washing soda, it sometimes does not all dissolves, but forms a hard ball. We haven't had any problems with it.
I used to make liquid laudry soap, but my teenage girls didn't like it. :(
No itchies in this house!!!

Brenda- as far as using your own homemade soap make sure you make a Laundry Bar recipe- don't use regular hand soap. This can leave residue in your clothes since hand soap recipes are made to be moisturizing with unsafonified oils and glycerin. The laundry bar recipes will still have the cleansing glycerin but not have the residual oils that can leave soap scum like residue behind. Also some laundry bars have other natural cleaning agents in them as well which increase their power.

Hi, all! I've been using the powdered laundry detergent for some time now and I love it. HOWEVER, I used to run my whites with bleach every few washes to combat 'the dingies'. Is there a more natural solution to brighten my whites?

| I'm wondering about the bleach too. I had made my own laundry soap a looooong time ago and we had one of the old top load washers. We have one of the new HE front loaders now, would the homemade stuff still work in that? |

The homemade laundry soap is safe for HE machines. As far as bleaching- when I have the chance to hang my laundry in the sun I put a little lemon juice in the rinse water and hang in the sun for gentle bleaching. However, I do use bleach still especially in winter- just sparingly. You can also use hydrogen peroxide.
Oh and the borax in the homemade laundry soap partially turns to hydrogen peroxide when disolved in water that is above a certain degree- so if you have hot water then wash your whites in your hottest water and you will get a mild safe bleach there too- mostly color safe but make sure to wash darks and blacks in cold water.

I was using homemade, then all my husband's tee's turned really dingy. I even bought some "blueing" from the hardware store. So I haven't been using the homemade for about a year. We have springs all over our propery (too many, if that is possible, one runs through our basement!) and are on a well. Any help would be great, because I really want to use it. He wears those expensive thick Stafford tees from Penneys. That's why I hate to mess them up. Thanks!!!

Linda- if you have hard water that can be an issue- you need to make sure to add in baking soda (the same amount as the borax) into your mixture (baking soda softens water by binding to the minerals and such) and make sure you are using a laundry soap like Zote, Fels or even a homemade laundry soap but not the soap that is made for hand washing as that can leave a residue behind. Also put about a quarter to half cup of vinegar in the rinse water- that helps cut any residue and is a natural fabric softener.

Thanks! I just looked for Zote at Dollar General. No such thing. But our hispanic population is 43%, so I'm sure i'll be able to go to one of the stores tomorrow and get some. In fact, my friend coming over for dinner tonight is hispanic, so I'm sure she can help me! (she loves our american "mexican" food -- white chicken chili) I'll try it tomorrow!

Linda, go to Bilo. They have the pink Zote soap. And they have white, too. At least they do in St. Elmo. You can ask them to order it for you. They also have the Borax but can't order washing soda. Strange because Arm & Hammer makes it.

Where is United Grocery? I have never heard of that. I'd like to check that out. And that's cheap for the soap. Did you happen to find washing soda, too?

Do you have a recipe for homemade laundry bar soap and homemade laundry soap that you can share? I have never made either and would love to give it a try. My water is well water and hard.
