My mom is amazing - she got me a vintage apron with a fleur-de-lis pattern and a real french linen towel, and a vintage 40's pendleton jacket from the thrift store, she found my DH a book on vintage flies (the fishing variety) and she got my dad a hand-woven french tapestry of Mont St. Michel (we went there last year) - all from the thrift store!!! (with her senior discount too:D) I'm going to try it myself this year
Anyone else have Christmas thrift stories?

WOW, you are so lucky to have such a great Mom.
I'm very limited to the thrift stores that we have around here, but when I do get to go I can find some amazing stuff. I love to and dig around and find the "good stuff".
It's good to know that I'm not the only one that rejoices in getting "thrifty" gifts. I love the idea of not supporting mob shopping and I hate the idea of commercializing Christmas.

One stitch at a time, one day I may finish.

Oh how great! I would love vintage gifts from the thrift store!!!
My local antiques shop has lots of vintage stuff, and some of their prices aren't too bad.... unfortunately most of the thrift stores around here only sell the junk, all the good stuff goes to the 2 closest cities, both over an hours drive for me. :(
I do love garage sales though!!!

Living in Florida it seems that there are thrift stores and estate sales all the time. This past Christmas my daughter decided that she wanted vintage gifts. So, I visited my favorite thrift store and purchased her a vintage picnic basket for $6.00, teacups and saucers for $3.00 each, and vintage christmas ornaments. She was thrilled. I just love to rumage through things. I have purchased for myself a couple of quilts for $20.00 each and a beautiful crochet vintage table cloth for $25.00. How can you not want these beautiful heirlooms in your home!

Me too! I'm having a great time finding just the right thing. I love the thought of reusing something and no more plastic junk.

I have a daughter that is the queen of thrift shopping, craig's list and freecycle. She got me a beautiful candle shaped like a horse for free, she got me a shadowbox of a vintage doily at the thrift shop, she got her sister four Beatles figures (we looked them up on the internet they are worth $50.+ each)(Her sister is a manic Beatles fan) for free she got a whole bag of vintage linens for a couple of dollars and gave them to me and my sister for making Christmas Gifts. She collects rat and mouse stuff and I got her a couple of mouse figurines for Christmas from the thrift store. They were still in the boxes and were 1/4 of what they cost originally. She and her boyfriend moved into their own home several months ago and she totally furnished the place for almost nothing. They got a free big screen TV that he paid $7 dollars to fix. She is really good at it.

Too fun!! I know I can't expect to find something fabulous every time but I decided to go at least once a week and hopefully every third time I will find a "keeper"

I forgot to say that my one Christmas gift from the Thrift was a wooden box with a ceramic tile on top that had a large manly teapot and the word "tea". The box was lined with a brushed cotton. I didn't know exactly how to clean that but I sprayed it with a disinfectant and then wiped with a damp cloth. All the hinges and the latch were good and the tile was perfect! I spent about 4$ for it. I filled it with a box of Red Rose tea (perfect fit) and then gave it to my BIL who loves Red Rose tea! He was thrilled!

One thing I noticed there seemed to be a lot of "bags" of old craft supplies. Since my brain was toast...I was kinda going by all those...but I remembered I had this book I bought a while back by Suzi Millions called The Complete Book of Retro Crafts http://www.suziemillions.com In it there are all kinds of cool craft activities (some that I remember) using retro or retro inspired materials....well I saw a plastic tube ornament at the local antique store going for 6$! and I know I could have gotten 3 BAGS of misc craft supplies for that at the thrift.... Anyway...this thread has gotten my wheels a turnin a bit. It might be a retro/thrift inspired holiday this next year!

I know!! I love thrifting - used to have so many vintage dresses that I had to start a booth at an antique store. Those days are gone but there are still bargains to be had. I have lots of vacation time that I am going to have to use between the end of February and March so let me know if y'all plan something

Every year we do a vintage christmas, birthdays and just because in our family. I have been doing this for years and my family cannot believe the deals I get and the items they like so well. And it cost me little money and a little time. Vintage and resale are the way to go. Good luck. Your mom sounds like a gem.

Appreciate the little things, for they are not really that little.
