We've since moved from MA to the moutains of Virginia. But, we love
to tent camp and when we lived in MA, a few times a year we used to go up to Hermit Island Campground in Pemaquid, ME. It has a man-made road out to the campground and there are five beaches on "the island". There are wooded sites and then the nice ones in the dunes. It's truly amazing, all you hear all night are the nun buoys and waves crashing. It's expensive in season and crowded, so we used to go off season in early May and then in late sept or oct. It's uncrowded then and used to be 1/2 off. This is one thing i really miss. It's definitely not a gourmet campground. If you go off season - dress WARM! Has anyone else been there?

We go camping near us - we can go 8 miles and camp. This year, we hope to travel somewhere new and camp though.

Hi Bea,
Never been where you're describing - but it sounds awesome.
We love visiting Maine - it is so beautiful and where we go is generally pretty quiet.
We are planning to vacation there with friends this August.
Maybe we'll check that out - thanks for the tip!

Blessings, staci

It's near bath Maine. If you want to camp in August though, you have to make a reservation now - they start taking them as of Jan 1st. The beach sites are incredible. Our FAVORITE was site 65 or 66 - 66w and 66n are good too. Site 65 and 66 are right on the water. Sites 57-64 are great as well - they are all on the ocean front. The rest of the sites are more in the woods, closer together and smaller. If i had to pick one thing i miss from moving away from New England with the family it would be our few trips to Hermit Island once a year. Then there is a beach called sand dollar beach and there are tons of sand dollars. Near by, you can drive to an old "fort" which the kids liked. This is NOT a gourmet campground though and they only allow tents and some sites can accommodate a tent trailer. I'm rather envious that you can even consider going. As I said we always went after the long weekend and before the long weekend in june because it was 1/2 price and we had the place to ourselves.

Well, at this point we're considering options (dreaming, wishing...) We probably won't make it there to camp this year, finances are definitely a big consideration and I don't think we want to haul our gear that far this year. But I would love to take a drive thru and check it out for future reference. I've never camped within sound of the sea - sounds heavenly.
