What do you think of this idea?

The beauty shop where I get my hair done is located on the historic downtown main street in our town. the owner has the shop set up in the back of the building. In the front of the building is a large space that is being under-utilized. (She has two racks of beauty products displayed. That is all in the whole area) There are two wonderful bay display windows on the front of the building that are not decorated.

I am thinking I will propose to her that she develop that space into a mini craft mall. There isn't a craft mall in the area and there are many crafters in our town as evidenced by the Christmas Craft Show held every year. The cost would be minimal (wood, paint, and advertising) She could charge rent for the spaces or charge a commission. What do you think??? Any suggestions on how to present the idea to her???

Just remember some one has to be there to manage the craft store. She will not be able to it when working on her clients.

Maybe you could present it to her as something that would benefit her business. Maybe beauty related crafts like makeup bags, hair accesories, hankies etc. She should be able to jury in the items she wants and she could get a commission. Ive never heard of a craft store/beauty shop before but I would go to it if I had. :)

Maybe people interested in selling there could volunteer to staff the place a few hours a week, work on their craft right there and "tend the store". sounds like a win-win proposition if you can find enough people to stock and staff it.

She already has staff that run her cash register for her. They manage the tanning beds and do cleaning and such. She could just add cashiering for the crafts to their duties and use some of the proceeds from renting the booths to counteract some of the wages she is already paying.

The reason I want her to do this is because I want to rent a booth, but not run the whole thing by myself. Selfish, huh?

I do like the idea of limiting the craft items to Hair, Beuaty, and Fashion related stuff. Thx, Sara.

Also, if she did not want to use her staff, we may be able to pull off the co-op idea that Cindy has.

More ideas???? More discussion???? What do you think?????

Hi Sherone!
I like your idea! I was a hairdresser and salon owner for many years! I always thought the idea of a boutique in the retail area was a neat one. Ours was always filled with " hair and skin products" so we never ventured into other items. I like the idea of the items being " beauty " related as well...I can see selling small hand made bags/totes,made from recycled fabric or fabric remnents, knitted items such as small purses, and scarves, and hand painted clothing items. You could incorporate some items using the Salon Name to show you personalize items as well..This might help you sell more items to the existing salon customers too! Jewlery would be another great item to offer in your boutique space. As far as how to manage the space. You could offer to pay a flat fee for the space and manage it yourself. You could have the receptionist keep a seperate cash box and receipt booklet so that all sales made would go directly to you. You could also offer her a percentage of your total sales each month instead of monthly rent.

O.k... just food for thought!

Good luck with your idea.. keep at it... something will click!

Thanks for the ideas!! I spoke with the owner and she was hesitant to turn the whole area into a "craft mall". She has, however, given me permission to set up a booth for my totes, aprons and purses. I will pay her 20% of all sales and she will handle the book-keeping. I have to take care of the construction of the 10x10 booth and if I leave, I have to return the area back to it's original condition. My hope is that she will see how nice it looks and how well things sell and she will think about opening other booths.

I'll let you know how it goes. Maybe ya'll can try the idea in your areas!!

I own my shop also. Our industry is all about change and I think she will love the idea. If she works behind the chair in addition to owning it be warned she might put you to work on your idea :)
