A long time ago when my mom was sick with pneumonia my grandma brought a Kesslers whiskey bottle with some awful smelling stuff she'd mixed up. I just remember it had lard or some kind of oil in it and turpentine. She put a flannel cloth on moms chest and put this concoction on it. Mom got better and they always swore by this old recipe. Does anyone have one similar to this? I am so sick. Congested and achy and a bad sore throat. Thanks for any help.
~~Blessings, Mikki Jo

Mikki! I'm sick as an old dog too...My granny had a cough and cold formula that was onions, whiskey, lemons and a bit of some kind of sweetner...I suspect brown sugar...I was very little when she passed and no one else in my household is interested in preserving the past
so I'll just have to experiment until something works...I'm a big fan of granny medicine! Get better sweetie!

Awwww, you poor girls. So sorry to hear that you're both sick. My mom always talks about mustard plasters and onion plasters for the chest. Sounds very messy. I'm a BIG Vicks fan myself. It's my"Go-to" cure-all! That and "hot whiskey tottie." Please get better for the New Year girls! **hands each of you a heated blankie and a box of camphor tissues**

Thanks so much girls. Annika, I'm a big fan of granny medicine too. I tried a hot toddy the other night and had to choke it down. lol It did help my sore throat for a little bit. I'm so sick of chicken soup. Thanks again.

Hey girls, hope your both feeling better soon....I too have heard of the mustard plasters working wonders, but have no idea how to make one....and know you have to be kind of careful with em. My DH always stood by this one, take 3 aspirin, get into a hot bath and soak till your sweating, get out, dry off, and jump into bed and sweat it out. Always worked for both of us. Take care of you guys!!

Hope that you girls will start to feel better soon. I have made a mustard plaster and it really works. Crush yellow or black mustard seeds with a motor and piston you know that bowl and wooden piston. I used about 1 cup of seeds and crushed them. Made a paste with warm water. be careful cause your eyes will water. wet some muslin or white cotton spread the paste on the fabric and place the paste side down on your chest. Your chest will get hot . If chest gets to unconfortable and red remove plaster. Leave plaster on for about 10 min. no longer. Than take a warm shower. Hope this helps. Laurie

Mikki, I just got my Foxfire books out to look. In the 1st one there's a chapter on home remidies. For chest congestion there's a poultice made from kerosene, turpentine and pure lard. It says the lard prevents blistering. It doesn't give measurements though. Another one is camphor, mutton tallow, soot, pine tar, turpentine and lard. Apply to chest. Or you can render the fat of a polecat. Eat 2 or 3 spoonfuls. This will bring up the phlegm. That's what I would do myself. Since they are so plentyful in these here parts. Or if you can't catch a polecat, you might have some groundhog oil and goose oil handy. Maybe you have some in the pantry? Everyone should have some on hand just in case, you know. You rub that on your chest.
So one of these things should help you. Maybe a neighbor might run over and mix some of this up for you. But if not just drink whiskey and knock yourself out til you feel better.
Hope ya feel better real soon. Kris
