A little 4 month old half Jersey half Angus heifer. She's so cute. She's all black but she has the little Jersey face. They've been calling her Roxie so I guess she'll be Roxie Lou Belle. We put her in with Mazie and they are best buds already. I hope it stays that way. I am so excited to get her. So in about 2 1/2 years I'll be milking her.
I hope to breed Mazie next June so she'll calve the following March. So maybe in 15 months I'll be milking her. I hope Roxie will calm Mazie down some. She's so rambunctious.
So we're a 2 cow family again. I need to start working with them both a little every day to get them used to all the handling. And the halter and rope.

She was out there last night mooing like she wanted a bottle. My friend just finished the last bag of milk and that's all for her. She was also giving her some grain, too. I don't feed Mazie any grain. Just hay. Waht should I do? I really don't want to feed them grain. Will she be ok? I did give mine some pellets when I was trying to wean them then quit feeding it to them. They were just fine. They had plenty of grass in the pasture and hay. Roxie should be ok in a few days with just the grass and hay I hope. SHe follows Mazie all over.
Any advice about the feed?

hi kris, not sure if i know enough to say or not. we have cocoa and also dinner both calves. what i think is when so young and just off mama they need calf starter. i do not use medicated since she is used to grain already. here we have snow and freezing so no pasture now. grass here would only be bulk. we feed green grass sweet hay free choice. i am against graining cows in the long run. when they are being weaned i think they need more nutrtion than is in hay. their ruman is just getting going. i also give either alfalfa hay which is better a little at a time till used to it or pellet. just a thought. isnt it just great to go out and look at them and swoon. hope maze and her become best of friends and ALL the GOATIES sherrye |

Hey Sherry. She seems to be doing good. I went out and petted her all over. She was laying by the round bale. I tried to pet her tummy and her little teats but she didn't like that. I will do it every day. I need to find a halter. I have always rubbed and petted Mazie all over so she's used to it now. But this morning she kind of moved over.
But the new calf is out there eating grass and hay. She looks good so far. Maybe I won't need to worry about the grain. There's still plenty of grass in the pasture next door. They can go out there anytime they want to.
I put the goats out there and they are so dumb. They go straight to the corner in the muddy water and just stand there for a long time. Then I'll look out and they'll be in the pasture. They are so silly. Why do they do that? The sun is out and it's all over the pasture but not in the wet muddy corner where they stand. Silly goats. And the cows aren't even near them, either.
Well Sherry, how's your new girl Faith doing? Are ya still milking? I check out the KFC forum sometime and see you there. They are great over there. I will have to get back on it again. I like to see the pictures of the cows with their calves. So cute. I milked my one goat yesterday and was getting the bucket out of the fridge to go strain it and I hit the top of the fridge and spilled the whole thing on the floor. The cats and dogs were happy. But not me! Darn it. I hate when that happens. I'm just getting about a pint from her now and that's like gold.

hi kris, faith is living up to her name. she is stronger now. i am using mcness krestol salve on her twats. in one application i could see a difference. i will be glad when i get more milk in the claw than pieces of her. she is still shedding old scabs and skin in the inflations. i gave her antibiotics in shots too. today i put diatemacious earth on her backside. she is shedding hair and skin. might be a parasite. will work on that. the gal came by that sold her to me. she came for her horse coat. i thought she would be to embarrest (spellinglol)to show her face. she came she went. i did not say anything but hi. i wanted to tell her off for the care the cow did not get. but thought best to be peaceful. i will just help faith have a life now. her and buttercup are friends now and lick eachother all over. buttercup was aid on 24th ya i know how priceless the milk is. i get a half gallon from buttercup a day. i love my milk sherrye happy days |

Hey Sherry. I am so glad Faith is doing so well. I love how cows get along so well. If I got a new goat mine would try to kill her. They are so darn ornery. But we put Roxie in and Mazie was so happy to see another cow. They are together all the time now. And Roxie has never been on grass before. Always in a stall til now. She was running and kicking up her heels. She follows Mazie and she has taught her how to eat grass and hay from the round bale. It's nice to have a buddy.
You are the nicest person. But really, there is probably nothing you could have said to her that would have made a difference. Some people just don't get it at all. Even when it's staring them in the face. So you did the right thing by holding your tongue. Good for you. I hope you can figure out why her hair is falling out. Maybe nerves ot stress?

Kris, I'm happy for you having 2 girls you will eventually be able to milk(besides the goats of course). My DH still won't let me get a milk cow. Sure would save us money in the long run since my grandmother and my son both moved in with us this late summer we go through a gallon a day and that's if they are being conservative. That is just the 2 of them alone. There are 5 of us in the house total(6 this week as son's friend had problems at home and staying here right now). Sure wish he would change his mind, in some ways, also sure wish I had more time in the day to milk a cow. Guess I can't have it both ways.

Everyone needs a cow and some goats to milk! It sure sounds like you need a cow, Cindy. As much milk as ya'll drink. When all my grands are here, they go through a gallon a day. They actually like both goat and cow milk. They aren't picky at all. My friend who I got the calf from has 2 Jersey's she milks twice a day. She sells all she gets, too. $5 a gallon. She has a machine. I don't think I want the hassel of all that so I think I will hand milk. I hand milk the goats so what's one more udder. I will probably just milk in the pasture, too. Sarah has to scoop poop TAD and it takes the most time. And cows do poop while milking. Goats DO NOT! That was a big factor in the goat versus cow dilema. And dairy cow poop is nasty and really runny from all the grain, I guess. I am not going to grain feed mine at all. Roxie seems to be doing ok with hay and grass. I'll probably have to have a better quality hay when they are in milk. I'll deal with that when the time comes.

I was out there watching the 2 cows and the calf was nursing on Mazie. And she was letting her. Mazie is just 17 months old and has no udder but that calf was smacking away and Mazie just stood there and let her. Is this a normal thing? I have only seen it happen once so far, I hope it doesn't hurt Mazie's udder.

Hey Kelly. She is cute. Just picture a cute little Jersey but all black. She has the big Jersey eyes. We already have the routine going on. I put her in the stall in the chicken yard and keep her there all night. I did have to start feeding her a little feed, too. Didn't want to but she was already used to it. So she gets a half a coffee can of that twice a day. I kept her in all day yesterday because of a little rain. Today she got to go back out. Then back in again tonight. I have to lead her (really pull her) now but hopefully she'll learn to follow. I'll probably continue doing this and when she has a calf (in 2 1/2 years, I hope) I'll milk her there and keep the calf in the stall at night. Sounds like a plan.
I'm trying to pet her all over while she eats. She's already almost kicked me a few times when I get around the belly. But I'll have to be touching her while she's eating when I'm milking her. So she better get used to it. Can you imagine doing this for over 2 years just to train her? I'm already tired.

Good morning, Sherry. Her name is Roxie Lou Belle. I have been keeping her in the stall at night and let her in with Mazie during the day. I have not seen her trying to nurse again. It's so darn cold here. We're getting your cold air and snow, I think. I have only got a lead rope right now. No halter. I need to go to Tractor Supply and see if they have one. Or the feed store could order one, I guess. But right now I just tie the rope around her neck and do it that way. There was someone on KFC that had a tutorial with pictures on how to halter break a calf. I copied it all and now can't find it. I do remember she said to just tie the calf to a post and leave it there til it gets tired of fighting it. I did do that at first when I got her. I put her feed bowl outside the yard and tied her so she'd eat there. She does good so far. Not likin' the kicking, though.
I'll be looking to see what's going on with Faith.
