once January hits I'll be starting my very first sampler. I'm going to be buying a book (or two) on embroidery and finding my favorite alphabet fonts. any of you girls already have one made? could anyone recommend a good book, or what sort of fabric to use?
I'm real excited! if there is anyone else who is thinking about it, maybe we could start at the same time and kinda do it together, either on here or! by letter! so fun!
anyways, what are the thoughts out there?

I second the recommendation of Sublime Stitching. Jenny Hart's patterns are a ton of fun. I'm almost finished embroidering roller derby gals on my grocery tote. Her sampler is on my To-Stitch list too.

I have been thinking about do this to but have a cross-stitch piece to finish for my Mother before I can start. On the same subject I want to earn my Merit Badge for embroidery but don't like the dish towels in the Mary Jane Book. I just don't find the patterns to my taste. Does anyone know if you can earn the badge using different patterns?

I'm doing the same thing Heather!
Only I came up with a very simple pattern of my own to use, because our library has such outdated books and I didn't want to order anything. I am just using linen and very basic letters. I have an idea for the bottom- a picture, and am hoping to trace a design on the fabric. We can go along together if you want, but I do have a couple of quilt blocks I need to get finished first!
Nancy- go to the main forum page, then to farmgirl sisterhood and you'll see where it says "Earn Farmgirl Sisterhood Merit Badges". Once there it will give you all the instructions you need, but be sure to let us know if you have any questions!

You earn them by doing the requirement for each badge. Go the the MJF homepage and look under the section for the sisterhood,it says ""find out more etc. Then just scroll down until it tells you how to earn badges. Basically you submit what you did to earn the badge and if you can you post photo's of the results. Then you wait and they e-mail you and post it on the merit badge chat. It is sort of like earning Girl Scout Badges. Then they send you the template for the badge and you do the embroidery. Good luck it is fun.

Thanks! I will try to figure it out. Blasted computers...it's not me mind you it is this thing....lol....we have a blizzard going on here! Really unusual here now. Now back in my younger days growing up we had lots of snow. My boys would say back in the ice age..lol...

Hi All!
MissLiss and I have started our local chapter and we're having our first meeting in a week and guess what our first project is! A sampler! I have no idea how to get started, yet. I'm looking up stitches and alphabets and what fabric to use. Linen seems to be the most common, now I'll have to see if it's at Joann's and how much I'll have to shell out for that!

My Mom wants me to teach her how to embroider. I think I'll start her on a sampler as well! Think I'll head to Joanne's or Michael's tomorrow to see what kind of fabric I can find. I have a coupon here somewhere.

An Embroidery "thread" would be nice. Maybe we can keep this going!!
I would do the sampler on nice material if your going to keep it around for a while.
I do alot of freehand things on old feed sack material, its easy to tea dye it later if I want an "old" look
to my project.

Where do you get old feed sack material? is it something you can buy new, I'm assuming not since old is in the name, but I still wonder...
And I wanted something to do for my mom for her birthday and she loves donkeys. So I found the cutest little clip art and sketched it onto some fabric and am embroidering over the clip art. can't beat the price, it was free! Does anyone else do that? I also plann on embroidering a schooner onto some pillow cases for my nautical bedroom. Clip art is just perfect!

Cindy- An embroidery thread!!! Yes, I love this idea!
I learned how to embroider when I was very young, did some in my high school years, and am just now in my middle age, doing it again! I forgot how enjoyable it is!
I just finished embroidering a few things on tote bags for my girls for Christmas, and am ready to start on my sampler! :)

Hey girls, did you know that JoAnn Fabrics sell "feedsack" dish towels? They come in packages of two and are really nice to embroider on. I made several for Christmas gifts.I would imagine that they could be bought on-line as well if there isn't a store near where you live?!! I think the package had two towels in it and was like 5.99 and I had a coupon for so much off.Just thought I would let you know.

Heather, yes the white cotton dish towels are as close as you can get to the old feed sack material.
or some use muslin material or if you go to Joann's they may have some toweling material.
The toweling is hard for me to get but "LUCKY" me :))) I inherited grannys Box full of old feed sacks! I couldn't believe in a huge family that no one else wanted them !T hey are one of my most prized possessions ! I love them for embroidery, I have even tea dyed some - they were stained but still very usable. Some are still sewn together and most are the large to extra large size. The print is about gone on all but a few, so I think some were originally flour or sugar bags.

I would love to see some of your patterns that you guys have , I guess I mean your paper that you have your sampler written out on. I am having a hard time getting started on what to put where and just how to lay it all out on paper before I start? Are you guys doing it that way? or another way? Thanks for any help!!! Bev

I want to do a freehand saying and make it into a potholder. I haven't done something like this in forever. I have a couple questions.
Can I use any type of fabric to stitch on? Is there anything I should do to the back of the fabric to make it sturdier to stitch it? If I were to use embroidery cloth would it hold up okay in a potholder which may be washed?
